The newspaper article, "Making the Desert Bloom", with the picture of Michael Curtin and his companions, was written on Wednesday, September 8, 1999. The photo included the following people: Peter Ngari, Oswald Ranta, Michael Curtin, Clara Sedibe, and two others.

The leaflet ad of the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency reads as follows: 'Troubled? Seek the advice of Botswana's only accredited experts. Is there someone that you know & love who has mysteriously vanished? Has some valued article been stolen? Sexual harassment at the work place? Whatever your problem is... We Can Help You. Mma Ramotswe (Detective). Bring this leaflet with you for your free discount.'
At the grave of Precious Ramotswe's son, it is written: "Daniel Obed Ramotswe Mokoti, Born & Died 5 Sept 1994. 'He has gone to a place where there are no tears.'"
Mma Ramotswe: This is a very odd letter. 'Too many smart young men I see. Getting promoted over me. And rising up the salary scale. Only because he is a male.'
Mma Ramotswe: (to Mma Makutsi) That's because my father left me plenty of cattle. If it weren't for that, I'd be slaving away in an office like everybody else, going nowhere. I didn't mean that you are going nowhere.
Mma Ramotswe: I lost a child myself. A boy. He was born, but he did not live. We think we'll get over the pain, but it never happens.
Mma Ramotswe: Places have echoes. If we are sensitive enough, we might pick up a feeling of what happened there.
Mma Makutsi: I'm having a private business call.
BK: Is it private or business? Make up your mind.
Mma Makutsi: Out! Out!
JLB Matekoni: Americans are very clever people. They can send rockets into space. But science isn't the only thing. There are other things that make the world what it is. Things of the spirit. Americans never notice that, even though they're right under their noses.
Sporty Guy 1: What's in it for us?
Mma Ramotswe: Maybe... just maybe, I'll try to find a couple of girls desperate enough to deal with your crazy chatter.
(Sporty Guy 1 and Sporty Guy 2 laughs as Mma Ramotswe leaves the shop.)
Sporty Guy 1: We don't need two girls! Just one who's big enough for two.
Mma Makutsi: We (she and Mma Ramotswe) were right in the middle of a business conversation.
BK: I'm a serial interruptor. You'll have to get used to it.
Mma Ramotswe: If a wrong-doer is truly sorry for what he has done, the person he's harmed will try to forgive him. I think that's what your son would want.
Mrs. Curtin: The African heart.
Mma Ramotswe: It only takes one person to tell the truth. Just one.
Mma Ramotswe: Doctor Ranta, it is so obvious that you are not telling the truth. You may as well have a neon sign around your neck saying, 'Liar'.
Mma Ramotswe: Use of one's head is the primary qualification of a good detective.
Mma Ramotswe: (to Mma Makutsi) There is no other person on the phase of this great continent that I would be more proud to have as an assistant detective.
