The O.C.

Season 3 Episode 11

The Safe Harbor

Aired Thursday 9:00 PM Jan 12, 2006 on FOX

  • Trivia

    • When Ryan comes to Marissa around seventeen minutes from the start of this episode, they talk, and in one shot, you can see that Marissa put her hair behind her left ear. In the next one, however, you can't see the ear. Then, once again, the hair is behind the ear.

    • Goof: When Ryan joins Marissa for lunch at Newport Union, Marissa gets a call on her cell. She says it's from Chilli and gets up to leave. In one shot, her cell is in her left hand as she bends down to kiss Ryan. Then, the camera switches shots, and Marissa's left hand is empty (you can partially see her hand briefly run down Ryan's arm) and as the camera pulls out, the cell phone is on her dinner tray.

    • We find out that after years of reading tabloids, Summer can read lips.

    • Taylor Townsend's mom is a sports agent.

  • Quotes

    • Marissa: Thanks so much for doing this.
Ryan: It really means a lot.
Sandy: Ornery judge, captive audience, righteousness on my side. I feel right at home.

    • Seth: No word back from Taylor...
Ryan: We leave in an hour and no sign of Marissa.
Summer: So what are you guys saying?
Seth: That this was a valiant campaign.
      Ryan: Yeah, really valiant.
Seth: One any general would be proud of.
Summer: Surrender much? I bet Napoleon never talked like this.
Ryan: Well, maybe he should have right before he was defeated and exiled.
Seth: Summer, my little empress, this is our Waterloo we need to retreat and minimise collateral damage.
Summer: Well, can't we just wait a couple of minutes before we raise the white flag?

    • Seth: Taylor, hi I need to talk...
Taylor: Well I would love to talk to you, about anything but Marissa Cooper.
Seth: I have been sanctioned to offer you sexual favours, I swear Summer said it was OK.
Taylor: (Gawps) WOW, anything else and you would be facing a long night involving candle wax, tube socks and the new Fiona Apple CD. But Marissa, I can't.

    • Summer: Prong one of the campaign has been initiated. You and I will take on prong two. Grass roots. You know, information booth, petition, maybe a protest rally.
Seth: How many prongs are involved in this operation?
Summer: Dude, like, so many prongs.

    • Summer: Well, there might be a slight issue. I mean, not like an issue issue, a friend issue -- a Johnny issue.

    • (Talking about winter break)
Summer: I wish I could, like, TiVo it so we could play it over and over again until graduation.

  • Notes

    • Music:

"Dancing In The Moonlight" by Magnet

  • Allusions

    • Summer: I'm picturing, like, Indecent Proposal. You're Demi, naturally, and Taylor is a leather faced guy who talks to horses.
Indecent Proposal is a 1993 drama film that starred Robert Redford and Demi Moore.

    • In the scene where Taylor's mother comes to the school and discovers that Taylor is trying to help get Marissa re-admitted, Taylor is holding a sign that reads "Marissa Cooper graduates." This is a reference to a well-known episode of Beverly Hills 90210 in which the senior and junior classes stage a walkout to demand that Donna Martin be allowed to graduate. The assembled students march while chanting, "Donna Martin graduates!"
