With an episode title as "The Secret", it would obviously mean a lot of drama would ensue. It did, but the way it unfolded here in this episode? Wow, it took me by surprise and my face was still quite shocked for a minute after finding out that Luke's dad is gay The whole situation with Luke and Ryan being partners seemed like trouble enough, but to see them hangout at the dealdership looked like a new beginning could happen between them two. And then THAT happened! Not to mention the whole scuffle that Jimmy Cooper revealed about him kissing Kirsten. It was neat to see how towards its ending, these two situations eventually came together to resolve each other. The whole moral about trust and honesty was handled very nicely; Ryan didn't trust Marissa enough, and Kirsten wasn't very honest with Sandy. Perhaps with this event, we'll see more of Luke befriending Ryan? In addition the whole Julie Cooper incident seems to have evolved and it'll be interesting to see how that turns out.moreless

Sometimes in life, you judge people too quick. As bad as Luke was, he is still human, and it looks like after all the bad things that happened, Luke has changed. It shocked me to see Luke’s dad turn out to be gay though, not that there is something wrong, it was just a bad way for Luke to find out. Seth seems to be getting a taste of reality; you can’t just juggle two girls and expect to get out scott free. Though Summer and Anna’s hooking up as potential friends was a bit unexpected, though I guess having the same guy juggle you can do that. It’s just funny that as soon as Seth says he is sorry, both Anna and Summer seem to go back to their old ways. I kind of feel sorry for Luke, as even jerks don’t deserve what he was put through (the whole school knowing about his father being gay This show presents so many conflicts, and it really puts a smile on my face sometimes, it’s a pretty good show.moreless

Ryan learns more about Luke when they're paired for a school science project which is that Luke isn't the macho tough guy he puts out to his friends, but he is quite a nice person with a perfect home life. But things take a sudden turn when Ryan and Luke stumble upon a secret of Luke's father's homosexuality. The next day, the news of Luke's father is the talk of the whole school and the town resulting in negative reactions to Luke from his friends, in which he blames Ryan who denies telling anyone about his father being gay Meanwhile, Kristen continues to avoid Jimmy over their disastrous Thanksgiving dinner encounter, while Sandy has some advice for Jimmy over his legal problems which doesn't set well with Julie over selling their house to pay off the money he lost.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • Trivia: While Marissa and Ryan are talking in class, the teacher is taking role. If you listen closely you can hear her call out Stephanie Savage, who is one of the producers.

    • Episode Punch Count: 2

    • Goof: In Episode 3: The Gamble, when Luke gets out of jail, he is picked up by his "parents", which in that episode are a blonde women and an old man. However, we now see that his parents are distinctly different.

    • Goof: When Marissa, Ryan and Luke get home, Luke is really beat up, as for Ryan he looks barely touched. Is it really possible he didn't get hit by at least one punch?

    • Goof: In the scene when Sandy congratulates Ryan on being out of trouble for a while, we first see Ryan with a round glass, but when they clink glasses, Ryan's glass is different.

    • Goof: In the opening scene, Seth makes reference to it being November. But if it is the first day of school after Thanksgiving, 2003, it should be Monday, December 1st.

    • Goof: I noticed this when I watched the episode the second time. While they first walk into the dealership you see the Lexus symbol on the door, plus after the boys see Luke's dad and run out, on the wall behind his dad's head you see Lexus writen. Now, why are there Ford Mustangs in the Lexus dealership?

    • Goof: How did Luke get into the car dealership? It must have been locked if no one was there, and even if he had a key and knew the security code, wouldn't his dad notice that the door was open and the alarm was off?
Also the first car they sit in is unlocked with the keys in the ignition (as he imediately opens the door and turns on the radio), but why would the second car have its alarm on?

  • QUOTES (15)

    • Seth: So I guess this means that you and Luke are not friends, which I find oddly comforting.

    • Luke: What are you looking at queer?
Seth: Somebody like, need new material?
      (Luke gives an evil stare)
Seth: Alright, go with what works.

    • Kirsten: You know what I wanna know?
      Sandy: Yogalaties
Kirsten: Is why these two are so smug.
Seth: Because for once they didn't do anything wrong.
Sandy: That's true. Here's to Ya
      Ryan: Back at ya.
Kirsten: Enjoy it boys, because knowing the two of you, it won't last long.
      Sandy: Yogalaties.

    • Sandy: Oh, the Summer flu. I just got it, that's good.

    • (Luke, Ryan, Marissa and Seth are walking into the schoolyard)
Luke: This is gonna be weird.
      Ryan: Yepp.
Luke: Everybody's gonna be staring at me. Talking.
      Marissa: Yepp.
Luke: Maybe I can just blow the whole thing off. Go hit the beach, give everybody time to get it out of their systems.
Ryan: It doesn't work like that. It's been months. I'm still the kid from Chino that burnt a house down.
Marissa: And I'm still the girl who tried to kill herself in Mexico.
      Seth: I'm still..the... I'm still Seth Cohen.
Luke: Man, this is gonna suck.
Seth Yeah, well, welcome to my world.

    • Seth: (about Summer and Anna) These are 2 people who hate each other, brought together by their own greater hatred of me. It's like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader teaming up to destroy the Emperor.

    • Summer: Look, if you want him, you can have him. I'm done.
      Anna: Thanks, but that's ok.
Summer: Right, because you couldn't possibly be interested in someone that's interested in me.
Anna: No, because I couldn't possibly be interested in someone that treats women that way.
      Summer: Oh.

    • Kirsten: So did you tell everyone I was drunk at Thanksgiving?
Julie: Well, everyone was wondering where you were, so…
Kirsten: I was at the office, working.
Julie: Well hey, it's ok. We're all friends here.
Kirsten: Well if we're all friends, why don't you start acting like one?

    • Summer: You're like, flossing. At school.
Anna: Do you have any idea how much bacteria accumulates in your mouth between lunch and dinner?
Summer: No, but the fact that you do tells me everything.

    • Seth: So how was your date with Luke? Your new study buddy?
Ryan: It was fine. (to Marissa) Something for the road?
Seth: Yes! I would like something for the road, it's called gossip. Was there any cross-burning? Any goose-stepping? Small Taiwanese family locked in the basement? What?
Ryan: Not so much. (to Marissa) Fruit? Bagel?
Marissa: Uh, yeah, a bagel would be good.
Seth: Yes, so would some information. Dude, you went behind enemy lines. Come on, the parents, what's the deal? Cyborgs? Supremacists? Vegans?

    • Summer: So did you study for the bio thing?
      Anna: Kind of.
      Summer: Well I didn't.
Anna: Don't worry. All you have to remember is: kittens prefer cream or fish, generally speaking.
      Summer: Excuse me??
Anna: (laughs) Kingdom. Phylum. Class. Order. Family. Genus. Species.
Summer: Wow, you're like, really smart.
      Anna: Compared to what?
      Summer: Well…me.
      Anna: Summer, you're smart.
Summer: Well, smart enough to sit next to you. (laughs) What was that kitten thing again?
Anna: Kittens prefer cream or fish, generally speaking. Or, if you're not a cat person: King Phillip comes over for good sex.
Summer: Definitely not a cat person!
      Anna: Right? (both laugh)

    • (Seth wants to stay home to avoid confronting Summer and Anna)
Ryan: Summer and Anna will assume you're too afraid to face them.
Seth: Hey I'm not afraid of Summer and Anna. Alright, well I'm not afraid of Anna.

    • Ryan: Maybe you've got the Summer flu?
Seth: Yes, it's November, but it's possible.
Ryan: Maybe you need some Anna-biotics.

    • (Seth runs into Summer and Anna.)
      Seth: H-hi Summer...and Anna...hanging out together. Wow. Wow, that's...awkward.
      Anna: Not really.
      Seth: I meant for me.

    • Ryan: I was just over there. They seemed really happy.
Seth: Yeah? And by happy, do you mean... (whispers) gay?
