I just got my copy of season 5 on DVD and Im enjoying it, except for one thing: on the episode "Strike Up the Band or else....." at the very end of the episode the way it was originally shown has Pernell Roberts as Billy Joe wanting to sing. But instead of the country music that he loves, he goes into romantic version of "Cocktails for Two". On the DVD, however, the scene begins with Oscar asking Felix if Billy Joe could sing, which is the way it was shown, but just as Felix rants about Oscars chicanery the scene cuts off. Now Im realistic. They couldnt get the rights to the songs so they cant use them, okay, I understand that. Unlike a show like WKRP, where hit music was used effectively in the original, but now the scenes has been completely altered to the point it damages the episodes, the alterations havent really damaged the shows, but in this episode the damage is serious. The effect is jarring. Im just curious as to how many people think the final scene of that episode might have just as well been cut out completely. I think theyve done that in syndication and the effect is less jarring than to cut in mid scene.
