  • Oscar loses a poker match to football owner Bill Joe Grissom and owes him $500. To pay him off he puts up Felix' band The Sophisticatos as colleteral. The problem is, Billy Joe is expecting a country and western band. Will Felix go along? Stay tuned!moreless

Its been a long time since Ive seen this episode, but it is still one of the funniest episodes of the series. First we have Oscar trying to lie to get Felix to lend him the money, then Oscar tries to get Felix to go along with the charade of pretending his band is a country music band. One of the highlights is Oscars singing "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" so terribly Felix has to do it. And of course, theres the square dance, which is just hilarious. Ironically, though its Felix you would think would be out of place at a hoedown, Felix actually enjoys it, while Oscar is the one who seems out of place. I like how Felix is so easy to forgive Oscar and how well he adapts. This is one of those episodes where he is hardly annoying. While Oscar comes off looking more sneaky than usual. And the music is pretty good too. Be forewarned, though. If you are like me and just bought the new 5th season DVD, this is one of the most severely edited episodes of all the DVDs. While Jeepers Creepers remains intact, Tumbling Tumbleweeds and most of the songs at the hoedown, you will not hear "Cocktails for Two" on this DVD, not when The Sophisticatos play it early on, nor when Pernell Roberts sings it at the closing coda. Whats worse, the final scene leading up to his song is cut off abruptly while Oscar is trying to ask Felix if Bill Joe can sing. Its very jarring the way in which it is cut. I would have rather they just cut off the coda completely, because there seems to be no reason to keep it without the song. For the most part they have been discreet with their editing, but this time they did a real hatchet job. Still, it doesn't completely ruin what was a terrific episode. This shows how high a level the writing was during the final season.moreless
  • "The Odd Couple"'s most annoying episode.

To steal a line from Red from "That 70s Show" this episode "looks like Hee Haw threw up"!

Where do I begin? With how Bonanza/Trapper John M.D. star Pernell Roberts is straight-up annoying as a loudmouth character (though his sideburns are even louder) who calls everyone either "boy" or "buddy"? How everyone in the last part of this episode wears Hicory Farms salespeople apparel? Or with the idea of Felix's band The Sophisticatos--with muted trumpet and Murray's ukelele--being accepted by the annoying loudmouth as "a REAL country band"?

    Take your choice!

This is easily my pick for "Most Annoying" Odd Couple episode. Though it's interesting how a line from this episode would reappear twenty-some years later in a Seinfeld classic ("You can stuff your sorries in a sack, mister).moreless

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Oscar: I got a full house -- three kings, two queens. Sorry 'bout that.
Billy Joe: Uh uh! I'm 'fraid I got you whooped, Oscar. Two pair.
Oscar: Since when does two pair beat a full house?
Billy Joe: When they're two pair o' aces.
Oscar: Four aces? That's all there are!

    • Dick: Billy Joe, I got bad news for you. Looks like Ma Gump ain't gonna be able to make it up from El Paso this week for the dance. She's in a family way.
Oscar: I thought you said she was 58 years old!
Billy Joe: Well, now, she's a right pretty girl when she's got her teeth in.

    • Oscar: Will he take an IOU?
Dick: Well, last fellow who tried to give Billy Jo an IOU got about as far as the "O."
Oscar: "As far as the 'O'?"
Dick: Yeah. They found him a couple of days later coughin' up the ace of spades.

    • Oscar: (calling a square dance to "Turkey in the Straw")
Lead with your left and lead with your right,
Stand up, sit down, fight fight fight,
Then grab your foot, hop up and down,
      Shoes return on the ground
Bend way over, touch your toe,
      Shuffle off to Buffalo,
Grab your partner, drop your socks,
A dozen bagels upon the lox,
Shave and a haircut, two bits!

    • Oscar: What's the difference what kind of music you play? A band's a band, right?
Trumpet Player: Bob's a great country fiddle player.
Murray: Yeah, Oscar could play the washboard.
Felix: He's never even been near a washboard!
