    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Blanche's maiden name was Somers (in a nod to the actress who played her, Brett Somers) and she came from Kew Gardens, Queens.

      • Continuity: Felix says he was always allergic to animals, but this was not the case in "And Leave the Greyhound to Us," where he says he loves dogs. Also, according to first season episode, "Engrave Trouble," he, Gloria and the kids had a Pomeranian named Spot.

    • QUOTES (13)

      • Felix: Did you locate your prodigal boss?
Myrna: Not yet. I tried every place he eats at. The April Fool Taco, Edible Eddie's.
Felix: Did you try his new gourmet spot -- Hessian Heidi's Nautical Nosh?

      • Myrna: I love to hear the inside stuff on Mr. Madison 'cause all I ever see on the outside are the ketchup stains.

      • Blanche: (about green aquarium water) Are you sure there's something still alive in there? That tank is filthy.
Oscar: Food disappears every day. There must be something under there.
Blanche: I'm going to clean it while you're gone.
Oscar: Why? The fish love it. Instead of knocking themselves out swimming, they just hang there.
Blanche: If it gets any thicker, they're gonna have to learn to walk!

      • Blanche: Do you love me?
Oscar: Of course I love you. If I didn't love you, I would have dumped you years ago.
Blanche: You're so romantic. Your silver tongue just brought a tear to my eye.

      • Murray: Camaraderie is part of being in the army, Oscar. If you don't want to camarade with me, that's okay.

      • Lt. Felix: (looking at Oscar in his rumpled uniform) The uniform of the day is fatigue, soldier, not exhaustion.

      • Lt. Felix: Our objective, men, is to pull this man through inspection tomorrow. Because a good soldier is a clean soldier. And a clean soldier is a good soldier. And a good, clean soldier is good!

      • Felix: How's your morale, Greshler?
Murray: Comme ci comme ça, sir.
Felix: Fellas making fun of your nose? Saying, "Why do we need artillery, we've got Greshler's nose. The Army can't find a gas mask to fit him. When he looks up, it looks like a two-car garage."
Murray: I never heard that one before, sir.
Felix: I've heard it. They're saying that, Greshler.

      • Felix: What does your heart say?
Oscar: My heart says, "marry her." But I can't get my mouth to say it.

      • Felix: Be calm. Be calm. This is the most important decision you'll ever make in your life. You make a mistake now, you're gonna pay for it as long as you live.
Oscar: Felix, do me a favor, willya? Don't calm me down!

      • Felix: (keeping Blanche on the phone while Oscar gets up his nerve) The men hate me, Blanche. I'm a rotten officer. I don't have any leadership qualities. I never did. Even as a kid, I wasn't a leader. They made me crosswalk monitor. I was supposed to show parents where to park their cars. Parents used to stick out their hands for a left turn and hit me behind the ears.
Oscar: I found the right words. Gimme the phone.
Felix: Same thing in high school. I was president of the German club. Nobody would listen to me. If you can't get Germans to follow orders, who will?

      • (Oscar breaks into a pay phone on the base against Felix's warning, and it rings.)
        Felix: Uncle Sam caught you!

      • Felix: Penny for your thoughts?
        Oscar: Dollar for your death.

    • NOTES (2)

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Felix and Murray: Serenading Oscar and Blanche: "I Love You Truly..."
Oscar and Blanche get married, and have to spend their honeymoon on the army base. While there, Felix and Murray sing and play the song "I Love You Truly..." outside the barracks.
In Frank Capra's classic "It's A Wonderful Life", starring James Stewart & Donna Reed, Mary has her new husband George Bailey meet her at the old Granville house on their honeymoon night. Bert the cop & Ernie the cab driver serenade them with the song "I Love You Truly".
