The entire 1-hour "The Office" Season 7 finale was excellent except for the ending (which lowered my score a little)

I thought that this was an excellent episode of "The Office". There were a lot of laughs in this 1-hour Season 7 finale. Too bad we have to wait til' fall for Season 8 of "The Office" to premiere. Once again, I loved that Kathy Bates guest starred in this episode as Jo who also did a great job in the previous episode "Dwight K. Schrute, (Acting) Manager". I also loved all of the guest stars that were in this 1-hour episode such as Ray Roman, Will Arnett, and Jim Carrey. I also loved the cameo appearance of Ricky Gervais. The most hilarious scene in this episode was when Dwight wants to get the interview to be the manager again even though it didn't work out in the previous episode. Kathy Bates brought of all of the laughs in this episode. Dwight asking himself questions in the interview that he demanded was very funny. I loved the golden line that Dwight said which was "Bread is the paper of the food community. You write your sandwich on it." Everything in this entire episode was very funny and I enjoyed it except for the ending. The ending was just a little bit of a letdown because YET they still don't reveal who the new manager is going to be and we apparently have to wait til' Season 8 to find out. That just kind of angered me. Overall, a mostly excellent episode of "The Office" and a mostly excellent Season 7 finale. 9.5/10moreless

To the reviewer below me: I think you'd be surprised at how many people may agree with you. I'm of the opinion that "The Office" still has the potential to pull some quality episodes out next season and bring the show to some semblance of what it used to be, but the writers need to focus more and stop bringing in so many guest stars! Find a new boss and stick with it.

The problem with these episodes, even ones from last season, is that the show is clearly efficient at writing funny jokes for their characters but they fail to do anything original with any of their jokes. The jokes come and go as fast as something on Friends or The Big Bang Theory, and it just doesn't feel like the episodes or the plots are as fresh as they used to be.

There was a lot I laughed at for sure.. My favorite joke of the night may have been when Dwight was explaining the perks of letting him into an interview to Jim.. specifically when he tells him he'll have Erin eat garbage for entertainment. Also, Dwight had a great line with "Bread is the paper of the food community. You write your sandwich on it." I also liked the payoff of having Jim Carrey be in just the final twenty seconds, being the Finger Lakes guy. Perfect timing for the show, and kudos to Paul Lieberstein.

However, despite the humor in the episode, I agree with any and all reviewers who claim that the show seems to have lost its way. With no Michael Scott, the show is trying so hard to drag out replacing him that it's starting to become an anchor to the show. Of all the people introduced, I loved Catherine Tate the most.. she felt the most real, a mixture of David Brent, Michael Scott and a little bit of herself. And James Spader, despite being the weirdest, was also the most impressive acting wise. It's his strange nature that makes him so compelling.

But part of me just wants to yell at the show "Get a move on it!" They've waited about four or five episodes now, and while they've proved they can still be funny, they now need to show they can be a good show instead of simply a funny one.moreless

I'm sorry but no amount of special guest stars could have held the episode together. The Office just hasn't been great with finales as of late. The season 6 finale was an epic fail, and now this was just disappointing.

Hardly any progression in story, laughs were few and far, most of the guest stars were just off regardless of being enjoyable in other things, they just clearly didn't belong on The Office. That's the same thing I felt about Will Ferrel but I'm sure I'm going to get a plethora of thumbs-down votes on that one.

The Phyllis & Erin thing was just ridiculous and unfunny. The final Dwight scene didn't make any sense. And the Angela thing has been dragged out for so long, it's not even interesting. The writers are clearly grabbing at straws. The guest stars did nothing for the episode, and the finale did nothing for the series. Sorry, but that's the sad truth.moreless
