The Power and the Glory
AIRED:
The last priest is on the run. During an anti-clerical purge in one of the southern states of Mexico, he is hunted like a hare. Too human for heroism, too humble for martyrdom, the little worldly "whisky priest" is nevertheless impelled towards his squalid Calvary as much by his own compassion for humanity as by the efforts of his pursuers.moreless

      • David Susskind, involved in producing this version of Graham Greene's famous novel (via a stage version by Pierre Bost and Denis Cannan), pronounced himself dissatisfied with the results, and determined immediately to do another version on a grander scale, in the hopes of improvement. In 1961, a much larger and longer version - this time taken directly from Greene's novel and adapted by Dale Wassermann - was screened, with Laurence Olivier, George C. Scott and Julie Harris in leading roles. However, reviews were decidedly mixed, and Graham Greene himself was highly critical.
