    The beginning of the end for The Practice. The rest of the season could be called the “Alan Shore show”. It is of some contention amongst fans if this was the time that ABC told DEK that they were going to cancel the show. It was around this time that DEK may have came up with the idea for Eugene to fire Alan. The story is a rather well written typical Practice story. The main part is about Alan’s past and his hometown. We find out that Alan even had issues as a child and teenager. He had sex with his best friends mother played by Jill Clayburgh and he liked to be spanked by her. We get to meet Catherine Piper played by Betty White for the first time who will go on to be in Boston Legal except here instead of being portrayed as a slightly loony old lady as she is Boston Legal she is a vindictive vile woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. The rest of The Practice cast is barely in the background. This is Alan Shore show all the way.moreless

    • This isn't the first time The Practice follows the formula of husband having an affair and a woman who ends up dead, and he is now accuse of murder. The formula is followed even to the point where the defendant's wife wants to leave but has to stay seemingly "faithful" for the sake of the husband getting a not guilty verdict. The case itself is not what's interesting, but instead how Alan is reacting to his friend, his former lover (a mother of his friend), and his hometown.
