Jarod uses the police code "10-19" to indicate to Sydney his status as a "missing person." Ten-codes vary from one police department to another; however, there is no evidence that any police department in North Carolina--or anywhere else in the U.S., for that matter--uses 10-19 as a code for "missing person."
The newspaper articles in Jarod's notebook contain text unrelated to the headlines. For example, under the subhead "Local Woman Praised as a Hero," the opening paragraph of the story reads, "The 'mound of paperwork' was places in front of the door to prevent anyone from entering the Coast Guard offices before they could talk to the officer involved and force him to keep quiet. Great big puppies and teeny tiny kittens are the focus of a national probe here in Irvine this week."
Sheriff: Ma'am, you're under arrest for violation of criminal code 369.7.
Miss Parker: And what the hell is that?
Sydney: Carrying a concealed weapon. Says so right here in the book. Highlighted in yellow.
The North Carolina concealed carry law is actually N.C. Statute 14-269.
Jarod's Pretends: Police Officer & Canadian Mountie
Jarod's Discoveries: doughnuts & doughnut holes.
Jarod receives information about his mother that was traced back to The Centre. We never see what that information is, because Miss Parker burns it.
Miss Parker: Now, lemme get this straight...You stopped me because of an anonymous phone call?
Sheriff: Uh-huh.
Miss Parker: Do you mind telling me how you knew that this person was telling the truth?
Sheriff: He sounded honest.
Miss Parker: It's official. I'm in hell!
Jarod: Jarod Starr, with two 'R's.
Meyers: Hey! Like Ringo!
Jarod: Who's Ringo?
Broots: Well, has anyone alerted Miss Parker?
Centre op: We thought you'd want to.
Broots: I'd rather stick my head in a bear trap.
Bishop: See what happens when you act like an idiot?
Miss Parker: Guy has the bladder of a squirrel.
Jarod's surname: Starr (for police/marshal's badge?)
Miss Parker: I want you to know, I've seen Deliverance.
Referring to the 1972 John Boorman drama in which a group of businessmen, while on a canoing trip, wind up victims of hillbillies and locals who have no social or moral standards.
