  • A poorly-acted morality play on the dangers of over-protective mothers, almost deadly in its seriousness.

A boy faces charges after accidentally killing a friend in self-defense.

It only takes watching a few episodes of "Public Defender" to realize why it's not listed on the rolls of classic TV history. "Dragnet" it's surely not. It all comes off as a wooden half hour public service announcement. Reed Hadley is incredibly stiff, the scripts are cut-and-paste, the direction awkward.

In this case, a very young Dennis Hopper plays a young man accused of murdering a boy who is trying to act "manly" for the first time. The installment focuses on the deceased's mother and her efforts to prevent her son from fitting in, telling him he is "too good" for the other boys and "too delicate". The situations are maudlin and almost cringe-worthy in their dialog. The role of the public defender is certainly valiant as portrayed here, not only does he work to clear the defendant, but he manages to convince the over-protective mother to lay her guilt before the world at trial.

The episode wraps up with a narrated moral, in this case, not only can neglected children run afoul of the law, so can those that are smothered with affection. Sheesh, heavy going. Perhaps it's more effective as cautioning youth from becoming involved in such leaden drama.moreless
