  • A New Yorker (Don Mahoney) hitches a ride on the back of a wagon, is dropped from the ride onto the road, and rescued later by Lucas and Mark.

Mahoney, from the Bowery in New York is rescued by the McCains, given refuge, food and a job. Having sufficient money, he continues on his way with another stagecoach. But the driver is discovered to be a thief at the next way station, and kills his accuser and goes after Mahoney.

Mark hears Mahoney's story, believes him and tries to hide him. Taking him into the backwoods, he leads Mahoney through a number of efforts to hide their tracks (an episode I remember clearly from when I was a kid). Lucas and Micah, with a large posse also searching, go after him but so does the killer. Lucas appreciates the tricks Mark has employed, but also sees through them.

This is a very good, tight story, with a good climax.

    Well recommended.moreless
