In his final appearance as Gandolph Fitch, Isaac Hayes returns to "The Rockford Files." This is not the strongest episode, thanks largely to Dionne Warwick's "acting." It certainly isn't that singers can't make the transition to acting: Hayes nails his character once again. But Warwick looks lost on screen. None of her scenes ring true, particularly when she is called upon to show fear. But, stunt casting is stunt casting just as it is today, and it makes sense why producers would want her on as a guest star.
The chemistry between Garner and Hayes make up for the weaker guest performances and what is a very middling climax. The mystery isn't the thrust of this one; rather, it's the continuing bond and relationship between Rockford and Gandy, who have evolved from friendly adversaries to true friends. And the whole episode is capped off wonderfully by an unlikely appearance from Angel.
I'll stick with "The Hammer of C Block," since "Second Chance" doesn't go over as well.moreless
