Mistaken identity lands Jim in trouble again, this time on a government mission in South America and leads him to romance with a damsel in distress.

"South by Southeast" (a great title and play on the film) is unusual for "Rockford" for several reasons. It's outside of L.A., familiars like Rocky and Dennis are nowhere to be found and Jim is never really "hired" by anyone. He originally plays along with the Feds to get home, but stays on the case after he's drawn to Christine. It's a change-of-pace episode, but one that gives James Garner more of a chance to flex his muscle as a romantic leading man. The scenes Rockford and Christine share over dinner are really touching, especially when Christine offers to come to L.A. For one of the few times in the show, it looks as if Jim may be falling in love and not just making time with the gal of the week.

There's also some great comedy in this one, as Rockford has to contend with his "partners" - a pair of friendly, enthusiastic local agents who don't speak a word of English and don't realize that Rockford doesn't understand them.moreless
