'The Dexter Crisis' is another enjoyable first season 'Rockford Files' episode. It has a pretty interesting storyline, that contains a number of twists (as all good 'Rockford' episodes do!), and nice guest performances by Linda Kelsey and Lee Purcell, both female characters who, naturally, are much more than they appear to be and neither of whom can really be trusted.

This is another episode where there is no Rocky, Dennis or Beth, and things are carried by Rockford alone – there seemed to be quite a lot of instalments following this structure during this patch of the series, but James Garner pulls it off easily.

The casino sets seem a bit small and basic (especially by nowadays standards), but this is made up for to an extent by some nice location shooting in the Nevada desert.

We also meet a rival Private Detective, Kermit Higby, who we are led to understand has had a number of previous skirmishes with Rockford. However, this is the only episode in which Higby would appear in; we would meet one or two other rival PIs as the show progressed through the seasons.

On the whole, this is a good episode. It maybe could be tightened up in places, but this is in context of watching it almost 40 years later, where we are used to pacier storytelling and less runtime (due to more commercials). But this point isn't as severe as some other episodes, and there are enough plus points about 'The Dexter Crisis' for me to give it a very high 9.5 out of 10.moreless
