  • A stewardess turns to Rockford in fear of her life.

    9.2
Sharon Gless appears as the damsel in need of Jim's protection after a frightening encounter at the airport. Of course nothing is as clear cut as it seems, and Jim is soon posing a coin collector and roping in Angel's hit and miss assistance to get to the bottom of the creepy mystery. Director William Wiard, who would later work with James Garner's pal Steve McQueen takes full advantage of the night time scenes to create a creepy template for eerie suspense, something which perfectly counter balances the show's often triumphant sunny afternoon scenes. Dennis is as haggered and henpecked as ever, reluctantly agreeing to Jim's scheme, showing Joe Santos as an actor even when playing to type, still producing memorable performances. Another outstanding highlight of the show.moreless
  • What a start to Season 3!

    9.5
"The Rockford Files" starts its third season off on the right foot with a sharp episode that represents the series at its best.

We have a mystery that grows as it unfolds. What appears to be a random attack turns out to be tied to an assassination plot. As with most good episodes of "Rockford," much of the action stems from a 'wrong place/wrong time' scenario, and it's only Jim's dogged hunt that leads to the solution.

The whole gang is together, and everybody gets a chance to shine. Angel bilks Jim for the cost of the safehouse ("You wouldn't shoot me over a hundred bucks, wouldya?"); Dennis gives Jim grief (and takes a bullet for his trouble in the climax!); Rocky comes to help, and Beth is even on hand to offer legal support and to show some pangs of jealousy over Jim's relationship with Lori.

We have a shoot-out climax, and Rockford gets to use his gun (a rarity!). Good chemistry with Sharon Gless as the friend-in-need and a nice villain in Farrell. Garner won the Emmy for season 3, and this batch of episodes comes out of the gate strong with "The Fourth Man."moreless
