The Roxy

Show Summary

The Roxy is an ITV British music program that was developed as the alternative to MTV. The show quickly gained a following after the demise of a similar show called The Tube. Hosted by David Jensen and Kevin Sharkey, the show opened with rock group Erasure performing "Victim of Love." Unlike its predecessor, The Tube, which concentrated on rock and punk bands and up and coming musicians, The Roxy showcased mainstream artists that dominated the British charts in the UK. The show also utilized the music chart as seen on its sister radio show called The Network Chart Show. Featured artists include Belinda Carlisle, T'Pau, Carol Decker, Swingout Sister, Arnee and the Terminaters and Rick Astley. Although The Roxy showcased many spectacular performances, it did have its share of problems as a neophyte show. Unlike the more established and accessible Top of the Pops show, artists were not particularly thrilled with traveling to Newcastle upon Tyne for a five minute performance.
