The Royle Family

Show Summary

You could probably see a glimpse of your own family in the Royles. Mum (Sue Johnston), Dad (Ricky Tomlinson), Denise (Caroline Aherne) Antony (Ralf Little) and Denise's husband, Dave Best (Craig Cash) sit in front of the television in their dirty, untidy living room and are constantly smoking, talking and bickering. Created by Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash.

The Royle family is a personal favourite of mine and I could watch the DVDs over and over again. The writing is just superb and it is amazing how the dialogue is so good. There is no need for great drama with car crashes and cliff-hangers as the conversation says it all. My favourite thing about the Royle family is the quotes that keep appearing, Barbs constant interest in what Dave had for his tea and Antony (ant nee) having to do absolutely everything, going to the off licence, getting the cigarettes, making the tea, making the bacon sandwiches and the rest of them doing nothing, Cheryl’s diet and Nana’s dead friends. It’s brilliant. The small cast means you can really get to know the characters which are another great reason for loving the show.moreless

I have this show on DVD and I always watch it. I never get sick of it. I really do miss the show, and I wish the writers would at least consider a two part reunion show like others have done. The writing is fantastic, so is the acting, plot, characters and the outline. Who would've thought this show would be such a hit? I thought the ending to the show, Jim getting Sky TV for Christmas was excellent, especially the last line of the show ever: "Roger My Arse!" yelled by Jim.moreless
  • this show is rubbish my arse(as old Jim royle would say). a true classic.

I love this series, I think that this is the best comedy I ever watch. it's that funny because it's all true, taking off a working class family is pure genious. The best characters of the show was Jim and Nana (Norma) because Jim came out with rude stuff all the time and taking the piss out of everyone and Norma had a very funny kind of laugh that sounded like a witch and because she was the target for Jim to make me laugh. the state of the house they live in is funny to because it reminds me of some people who live like that. Its a shame that it ended after series 3 but maybe it was for the best, although I would've like to know what happened to anthony and emma in the end with the baby, and sheryl finding her true love and Norma actually died in that series and seeing Jim jump for joy, that would have been prices. Anyhoo a true classic to watch every few years for many years to come.moreless
  • SUE JOHNSTON HAS REVEALED THE DRAMATIC EFFECT HER MOTHER'S PARTING WORDS HAD ON HER WHEN SHE LEFT HOME TO GO TO DRAMA SCHOOL.
