  • I started watching this with the pretentious idea that I'd be ironic and find myself amused at how dated the production was, laughing at how the undertones of horror would be so cheesy and cliched. In reality, I almost crapped myself.moreless

This is, without a doubt, one of the best episodes of The Saint - or any other ITC programme, come to that - ever to be produced. The storyline involves Simon Templar joining a shooting party with old friend Ivor North, only to hear unearthly sounds and witness strange lights in the woods. When one of North's house staff disappears, a sinister series of events is set in motion.
Roy Baker demonstrates his mastery as a director by building an ominous and genuinely spooky atmosphere, especially in the first third of the story, with significant help from Edwin Astley's eerie score. Terry Nation's script blends an intriguing (if familiar) murder mystery with one or two red herrings thrown in, together with a sinister sci-fi element involving the deadly rays that have terrifying consequences for those in its reach (watch out for the scene where Templar spots a rabbit in the woods - eurgh!)
Overall, a flawless episode that genuinely surprises, unsettles and delivers a great storyline effectively with a refreshingly naturalistic performance by Roger Moore and an excellent guest cast.
The perfect example of ITC television.moreless
