The idea for San Pedro Beach Bums started with a producer visiting Walker's Cafe in San Pedro (near Point Fermin Park). There's a particular and rich history to San Pedro humor which can be found there. Unfortunately, Aaron Spelling chose to hire the usual bevy of writers and missed the point of the humor.

It could have been a good show with Mexican, Slav, and/or Italian (hyphen American) writers. Look, I have quite a few Jewish friends... and that works well for "Three's Company" and the like. The humor at Walker's is nothing like that.
  • Finally a show that has a likable main female character. The San Pedro Beach Bums is smart, cunning, and a little rickster. You never know what she is going to do next.

Finally a show that has a likable main female character. The San Pedro Beach Bums is smart, cunning, and a little rickster. You never know what she is going to do next. Unlike The characters she does not get everything she wants and then whines about. Unlike the Vampire she isn’t blessed with special powers and does nothing but complain about them. SHOW powers are her brains and wit. She works for what she wants. Though I think wanting he is wrong because even though he is cute he is also pretty dull. he would be a much better match for her.

The San Pedro Beach Bums was a lousy show of the late 70s and jumped the shark in the first 15 minutes of the premier episode. It was about 5 young men who lived on a houseboat, and got into semi wacky adventures. They were always in trouble for one reason or another. The cast were a bunch of nobody’s back them, and are still nobody’s. The plotlines of this show were weak, but it was fun for a short period. The best part of the show was the theme song. I feel sorry for the producer of this turkey, he probably never worked for ABC again.
