  • Sarah Jane is confronted by UNIT, who claim that the doctor is dead, while at the 'funeral' she meets another ex-companion

This one if I'm not mistaken is done by Russel T Davis, known for doing some of the most action packed, shocking and downright brilliant episodes in the doctor who Saga. So having gone through this episode, I was surprised at just how alarmingly average it seemed to me.

OK, with respect, Russel T Davis hasn't worked on the new Doctor before. But the main problem with this episode is that the entire episode was spent with this thought of the doctor still being alive. That was fairly obvious to most that were watching it. This isn't a terrible story, there are some nice characters, some interesting plot twists, and the references to 'The wedding of Sarah Jane Smith' were nice.

The other problem I have with this episode is the cliffhanger. I'd rather be thinking 'oh god, that's just happened' than 'will that happen.' And it's fairly obvious that the doctor will survive being blasted by the Shansheeth.

I found the UNIT stuff to be adequate, but not particularly interesting, the Groske the same

So in conclusion this is a fairly average episode. Part 2 on the other hand may provide improvements.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Sarah Jane mentions the Doctor taking her to San Martino in 1492. This occured in the Fourth Doctor episode The Masque of Mandragora.

    • Jo mentions Metebelis 3, the planet the Doctor often talked of visiting during her time with him, and the planet where he was exposed to a lethal dose of radiation, bringing about his regeneration into his fourth incarnation.

    • Sarah Jane and Jo both mention their trips to the planet Peladon, as seen in the Third Doctor episodes The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon.

    • The Brigadier absence from an appearance within an episode is once again explained by the excuse that he is in Peru. This reason was used in Doctor Who episode The Poison Sky and The Sarah Jane Adventures episode The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith.

    • Jo mentions that the Doctor once took her to the planet Karfel. The Sixth Doctor visited Karfel in the episode Timelash. During that episode, the natives mentioned what was presumably the same unchronicled adventure that the Doctor and Jo had there.

    • The Third Doctor's first companion, Liz Shaw, is briefly mentioned. She is unable to attend the funeral due to being on 'the moonbase' until Sunday.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Sarah Jane: Doctor?
      Rani: That's the Doctor?
Jo: What doctor? The Doctor? My Doctor?
Sarah Jane: Yeah, well, he can change his face.
Jo: Well, I know, but into a baby's?
The Doctor: Oi! Imagine it from my point of view. Last time I saw you, Jo Grant, you were what, 21, 22? It's like someone baked you.

    • Rani: Um, so, who else is coming?
Tia: Well, it's all been a bit of a rush. The Brigadier's stranded in Peru and Miss Shaw can't make it back from the moon base until Sunday.
Clyde: You've got a moon base? Oh, man. I am running out of reactions.

    • Tia: I'm sorry, but it's my solemn duty to inform you that your friend, the Doctor, is dead.
      Clyde: Don't be stupid.
      Rani: He can't be.
Tia: Last Sunday, 1700 hours, the body of a Time Lord was returned to the Earth. UNIT scientists have checked the DNA results and it's definitely him. I'm sorry, Miss Smith, for your loss. Sorry for the whole wide world because...he's gone. The Doctor's gone. He's dead.

    • The Doctor: Ah yes, the Claw Shansheeth of the fifteenth Funeral Fleet. I've been looking for you. Have you been telling people I'm dead?
Shansheeth: I apologise. The death notice was released a little too soon. Though I can rectify this... immediately! (blasts the Doctor with red energy) I'm so sorry for your loss, Doctor. Rest in peace!
