  • Another fantastic episode and a superb vehicle for the multi-talented Martin Shaw to show his stuff, which he does to wonderful effect.

    9.0
A French aristocrat's adopted daughter runs away from the convent where her father has hidden her to keep her safe. She rushes to join her lover, a now-deposed former aristocrat who believes that they have right and God on their side. Their band of rebels will fight until the death, which is exactly what they will have to do to escape the ambitious Chauvelin and the mad Mademoiselle Guillotine, both of whom are bent on death and destruction.

There are some very amusing moments in this episode which nicely lend themselves to offsetting the horror of all the madness as the guillotine takes more and more lives.

When Chauvelin realises he has a daughter and risks his own life to save her, it pulls strongly at the heartstrings, as does her death.

A beautifully executed plot and yet another reason to watch this great mini-series.moreless
