From what I can gather he is, in fact, human. From what I can put together from clues about his past, I'd have to say he's much older than he appears, much older than Doc at least. He is extremely strong for his age and size, managing to hold of Fiskerton by himself for some time. He has some manner of containing and controlling, if not just directing, smaller cryptids on his person and direct them at an enemy without worrying about them turning on him. Finally given his accent and his outfit in Once More the Nightmare Factory, he may have had some connection with the Nazi's. Perhaps being a traitor or collaborator during World War 2. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Well, he probably doesn't look human because he's wearing a mask,

    Hence the hinges.

WWII ended in 1945, so for Argost to be a member of the Nazis he would have to be at least 65 just to have been born by then. Assuming he was about 20 at the end of the war, that would make him around 85. So it's possible, although he doesn't come across as that old. It's also possible that he was the son of Nazis who fled capture, or just a fanatic who believed in the Nazi cause.
