  • Quotes

    • Chief Wiggum: You wouldn't happen to know anything about a cigarette truck that was hijacked outside of town, would you?
      Fat Tony: What's a truck?
Chief Wiggum: Don't play dumb with me!

    • Chief Wiggum: (to Fat Tony) I'm not gonna stop until one of us is in jail. (pause) You!

    • Lionel Hutz: I'm here defending you on the charges of . . . (looks at sheet) Murder One!? Even if I lose I'll be famous!

    • Chief Wiggum: You're all under arrest for the murder of Seymour Skinner!
      Fat Tony: What's a murder?
Chief Wiggum: Don't play dumb with me!

    • Homer: How much does it pay?
      Bart: Thirty bucks a week!
Homer: Pfft! I make more than that.

    • Fat Tony: Pick a horse, kid. We're putting two dollars on the third race. Make it a good one.
      Bart: Eat my shorts!
Fat Tony: Eat My Shorts? Okay, let's see ... wait a minute, you little punk! Eat My Shorts is in the fifth race! I said the third race!
      Bart: Don't have a cow.
Fat Tony: Hmm, Don't Have A Cow in the third, put a deuce on him.

    • Principle Skinner: Oh, licking envelopes can be fun! All you have to do is make a game of it.
      Bart: What kind of game?
Principle Skinner: Well, for example, you could see how many you could lick in an hour, then try to break that record.
Bart: Sounds like a pretty crappy game to me.
Principle Skinner: Yes, well... Get started.

    • Ralph: I'm going to eat chocolate till I barf!

    • Mrs. Krabappel: Bart Simpson, you're late. Go fill out a tardy slip.
Bart: But I'm only five... (looks at clock) ten, twenty... forty minutes? That's pretty damn late!

    • Bart: You ate my homework? I didn't know dogs really did that.

    • Lionel Hutz: Mr Simpson, you've been the boys father for ten years, do you really think he could be the leader of a murderous criminal syndicate?
Homer: Well not the leader, I mean... Oh it's true it's true, all the pieces fit!

    • Lady: Some large men to see you, sir.
Skinner: Uh, I don't have an appointment with any large men...
      Fat Tony: Are you Skinner?
Skinner: I'm Principal Skinner, yes! And how may I ask did you get past the hall monitors?

    • Bart: More stink lines boys...
Skinner: What's this? What are you boys doing?
Bart: (yawn) You didn't see nothing, now beat it!

    • Jack Larson: Folks, I'm pleased to announce a new truckload of Laramies with their smooth good taste and rich tobacco flavor is already heading towards Springfield and the driver has been instructed to ignore all stop signs and crosswalks.

    • Homer: Bart!? Have you started smoking?
      Bart: No!
Homer: Don't lie to me boy. Uh huh, cigarettes, just as I thought.
Bart: But they're not mine, my boss said his warehouse was full!
Homer: Yeah right, son, I'm going to teach you a lesson! I'm going to stand here and watch you smoke every one of those cigarettes!

    • Homer: Hey, look what I got, a genuine official police badge! "Calling all cars! Come out with your hands up!" Heh heh heh.
Bart: Hey, that's my badge, Homer!
Homer: That's Officer Homer, hee hee!

    • Chief Wiggum: Fat Tony is a cancer on this fair city. He is the cancer, and I am the...um...What cures cancer?

    • Bart: Uh, say, are you guys crooks?
Fat Tony: Bart, um, is it wrong to steal a loaf of bread to feed your starving family?
      Bart: No.
Fat Tony: Well, suppose you got a large starving family. Is it wrong to steal a truckload of bread to feed them?
      Bart: Uh uh.
Fat Tony: And, what if your family don't like bread? They like...cigarettes?
      Bart: I guess that's okay.
Fat Tony: Now, what if instead of giving them away, you sold them at a price that was practically giving them away. Would that be a crime, Bart?
      Bart: Hell, no!
      Fat Tony: Enjoy your gift.

  • Notes

    • What was originally intended to be a one-time guest appearance for Joe Mantegna would become a recurring role later on in the series' run. According to the Season 3 DVD commentary track, Joe Mantegna liked the character and wanted to voice him again.

    • Several elements of the plot, such as a child working for the mafia, and the cigarette heist, are similar to the film ''Goodfellas''. However, this episode did not knowingly parody the movie - the episode was written before it was released, but aired after.

    • The Fox censor had a problem with Homer holding a sign saying "Kill My Boy." The creators were able to get it in.

    • Itchy & Scratchy: "The Sounds Of Silencers"
With his Thompson submachine gun, Itchy pumps hundreds of bullets into seven tough-looking cats lined up against the wall. He fires his gun, spelling out the words "The End" against the wall.

    • First Appearance: Fat Tony, Legs

    • Blackboard Joke: High Explosives and school don't mix.
Couch Gag: The family enters the living room to find that the couch is missing.

  • Allusions

    • Hershey's Milk Chocolate
The Ah! Fudge candy wrapper is styled after the Hershey's Milk Chocolate bar wrapper

    • The French Connection
When Bart is running beside the bus trying to get on, Lisa smiles and waves from inside the bus just like Fernando Rey does to Gene Hackman in the subway sequence of the 1971 film The French Connection.

    • Itchy & Scratchy: The Sound Of Silencers
The title of the cartoon is taken from the Simon and Garfunkel song "The Sound Of Silence." The cartoon itself is a scene taken from the film, St. Valentines Day Massacre.

    • Cleveland Indians
The Native American, in the chocolate factory film, is a parody of the Cleveland Indians' mascot Chief Wahoo.

    • MacGyver
Principal Skinner's method of escape from his garage--A model rocket, a vacuum cleaner cord and cord retraction switch, and a support beam--is a parody the same kind of clever devices and gadgets devised with odds and ends and everyday products in the show MacGyver.

    • Goodfellas
Elements from this episode's plot--A juvenile used as a gofer for mobsters, the kid mixing their drinks, the bad guys threatening his principal when the kid begins missing school--are taken from the 1990 film Goodfellas.

    • The Godfather Fat Tony is styled much like the mobsters. In particular, Sonny Corleone, from the 1972 film The Godfather. Also, the scene when Bart wakes up screaming is a reference to Jack Woltz screaming after waking up in bed with a horse head.

    • Bart: Don't Have A Cow.
During the the fifth race, where Fat Tony bets on "Don't Have A Cow," the other horses in the race are named from other famous cartoon catch-phrases including: "Suffering Succtash" from Sylvester the Cat, "Yabba-Dabba-Doo" from Fred Flinstone, "Ain't I a Stinker?" by Bugs Bunny, and "That's All Folks" from Porky Pig.
