  • Barney sober puts the show back on its feet

    8.0
It's refreshing to watch a Simpsons episode built around Barney, a secondary character who has decided to get off the booze and lead a more productive life, with Homer as a complementary sidekick. It's not an especially funny episode, but the overall story held together and finished off well.
  • Barney? SOBER??

    8.0
Barney gives up beer after realizing how fat, and disgusting of a slob he is.

At first it is really hard, but he ends up being a helicopter pilot.

Bart and Lisa want to win a new bike. How do they do that? By taking a picture to be on the Springfield Phone Book. They are on Mt. Springfield, when a fire occurred. Barney and Homer rescue them. Bart takes a picture upside down of the fire, and is sure to win the bike.

When Marge tells them they won, they see the cover of the phone book and shriek in terror. Why? It is a baby picture of them both on the toilet. But at least they on the bike.

And now Barney is sober. Yay.

A good episode. I don't like Barney sober a lot but it was handled very well, in this episode.moreless
  • Barney sobers up while the kids try and get their picture on the phone book.

    8.5
This was a very funny episode, but it was sad to see Barney sober up because his funniest moments have been when we knew him as the dumb drunk. This was definaly a devastating change for the series as Barney is still sober to date. Many fans feel this was the wrong move, and maybe they are right. However, this episode did not disappoint; it had some great gags. Both the "a" and "b" plots were very solid, and even tho I dont agree with the writers decision 100% I still think they executed the plot in a masterful way.moreless

  • TRIVIA (4)

  • QUOTES (11)

    • Barney: When I think back to all the time I wasted at Moe's . . .
Homer: Wasted!? What about our staring contests? And the way we always knew what football coaches should have done? Remember the time we jumped that census guy and stole his clicker?

    • Cletus: Looky here! Cardy-board tubes!
Brandine: Now we can have indoor plumbing, just like they's got at the womens' lockup.
Cletus: They spoilt you, Brandine. Sometimes I don't even know who you are anymore.

    • (Homer and Bart look through the trash)
Homer: This muscle shirt is a pretty good find.
Bart: Dad, that's a sports bra.
Homer: All I know is, I'm finally getting the support I need.

    • Lisa: Oh, we'll never get a good picture.
Bart: Hey, let's dump spaghetti on Maggie's head.
      Lisa: That picture's a cliche.
      Bart: Picture?

    • Bart: We should be safe up here. I'm pretty sure fires can't climb trees.

    • Lisa: Dad, you did it!
Homer: You can't prove I did it!
Lisa: No, you saved our lives!
Homer: I could do a lot of things if I had the money!

    • Homer: I won't let you give up now, when you worked so hard to (Suddenly becomes drunk) be the greatest pal in the world. I love you. Let's not lose touch after graduation.

    • Marge: Kids! The new phonebooks are in and your picture's on the cover!
Bart and Lisa: Let me see! Let me see! Let me see! Let me see! Let me see! Let me... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
(We see a photo of Bart and Lisa on the toilet)
Marge: Isn't that adorable? I guess a few baby pictures were on that roll of film!

    • Lisa: Is that Rainier Wolfcastle?
      Bart: Check out the gut.
(Wolfcastle comes out of the Kwik-E-Mart with a huge gut, eating nachos and chili dogs)
Wolfcastle: It's for a movie I'm playing a fat secret agent.

    • Homer: You've gotta be sober to fly. I mean it's not like driving a car.

    • Barney: Wow, Homer, you took six silver bullets for me.
Homer (drunk): Stay away from my wife! (passes out)

  • NOTES (3)

    • Blackboard Joke: I was not touched "there" by an angel.
Couch Gag: The family from this series meet their old Tracey Ullman counterparts. Both groups scream and run away.

    • Other people at the AA meeting are Lindsey Naegle, Bernice Hibbert, Rainier Wolfcastle, Kirk Van Houten, Kent Brockman and Susan from 'Scenes from a Class Struggle in Springfield.'

    • As of this episode, Barney is no longer an alcoholic (he's now a coffee addict).

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Homer (to the tiki head): Get out of my dreams and into my car!

"Get Out Of My Dreams And Into My Car" is the title of a Billy Ocean song.

    • Sarcastic Man: Okay, but you want AA. This is AAA.
This exact same line was used in the 3rd Rock From The Sun episode entitled 'The Loud Solomon Family: A Dickumentary', which aired a few months before this episode.

    • The title of the episode is a reference to the 1962 film The Days of Wine and Roses. In this black and white film an alcoholic man meets a woman, whom he marries and then addicts to booze so that they may share his passion for alcohol together. Eventually he goes on the road to recovery while she remains an addict.
