Thefamily travels to New York City in search of Bart's long-lost love Mary Spucklerwho he wants to reconnect with since she has left Springfield and her hillbilly family there to reinvent herself in the big apple. The announcer canceled the show because he said that the people wanted Romeo and Juliet, not feuding families, except Romeo and Juliet is about feuding families.
Bart: Come on, Dad. You love New York. Now that your two least favorite buildings have been obliterated; Old Penn Station and Shea Stadium.
Homer: Lousy outdated relics!
Show Title: The Channel 6 News helicopter flying as its reporter falls out.
Billboard Gag: McBain Capital: Consider this a hostile takeover. (with McBain pictured holding a gun)
Chalkboard Gag: Bart in a white suit writing "I will not wear white after Labor Day", then takes it off as he leaves, seen in his regular clothes.
Couch Gag: Four of the Simpsons emerge from cocoons as butterflies, then fly out of a dollhouse as they're pursued by the monobrowed baby looking to swat when with a mallet. The chase continues throughout the day care center before the butterfly family sees their opportunity to escape when a worker is leaving. The door nearly closes, but Maggie appears and keeps it open long enough with her pacifier, enabling them to escape as the monobrowed brat runs into the door, stopping his pursuit. Maggie waves goodbye as the butterflies fly to their freedom.
Before the end credit sequence begins in full, the family runs on to the couch and Homer announces a couch gag contest, where the winning entry will be featured in the final episode of this season. More details found at: www.thesimpsons.com
The episode featured a dedication to the memory of Andy Williams in the end credit sequence.
"The Ballad of Cylinder Head" Music by Zooey Deschanel, Lyrics by Tim Long
The title Moonshine River is an allusion to the 1961 hit song "Moon River" written by Johnny Mercer and most notably performed by Andy Williams, who's mentioned in the end credits.
