Marge: You're teaching Bart a terrible lesson of intolerance!
Homer: I'm sorry. It's just so fun and easy to judge people based on religion.
Kearney: What's your name, sweat stain?
Bashir: Uh, Bashir?
Kearney: "Bash here?" I love a kid that comes with directions.
Marge: Okay, remember our deal: Everyone gets to return one Christmas present with no hurt feelings. (holds up calendar with "From Bart" sticker) I'm returning this kitten calendar.
Lisa: (holds up identical calendar) Um, I'm also returning this kitten calendar.
Homer: Kitten calendar.
(Maggie holds up kitten calendar)
Bart: Hey, those are 15-month calendars! That gives you three extra kittens.
(The family stares at him blankly. He takes back the calendars)
Bart: That's the last time I get you guys a Christmas present at the last minute. (looks at back of calendar) Man, those are ugly kittens.
Homer: Praise to Oliver.
Mina: That's "Allah."
Homer: Aw, we'll look it up in the Corona.
Homer: Marge! I was right! Everybody is whatever I think they are!
Bashir: (holding Bart's slingshot) Bart forgot this, sir.
Homer: Sir? That's the kind of respect you'd have to strangle out of an American kid.
This episode received special praise from The Council on American-Islamic Relations for "bringing to light how Americans can work toward mutual respect and inclusion by getting to know their neighbors." and "for tackling the disturbing phenomenon of Islamophobia."
Itchy & Scratchy: "diEpod Slaylist" Itchy cranks up Scratchy's myPod volume so loud that it melts his brain. Itchy replaces Scratchy's brain with Einstein's. A much smarter Scratchy invents the atomic bomb, then upon realizing its destructive power he invents a time machine and goes back in time to stop himself from inventing the A-bomb. But just as he goes to warn himself, he realizes it's a trap; Itchy has replaced the old Scratchy with an A-bomb decoyed as Scratchy. Itchy watches from a distance as the A-bomb explodes and then enters his own time machine and heads for Studio 54 circa the '70s.
Blackboard Joke: Prosperity is just around the corner.
Couch Gag: The family rushes into the living room and is startled to see Bart writing "I will not bring the chalkboard home" on a chalkboard.
When Steve Mobs is speaking from his undersea headquarters, you see a horned female narwhal swimming in the background. This is a nod to another Matt Groening creation, Bender's Big Score which is a feature-length movie based on the series Futurama.
Disney's Aladdin In Homer's dream, he meets a blue genie very much like the one from the 1992 Disney animated film and subsequent TV series, Aladdin (1994-95). Not only does the genie look nearly exactly the same, but Dan Castellaneta also voiced the Genie in both the Aladdin TV show and the Kingdom Hearts video games, as well as the movie The Return of Jafar.
Moe says to Homer, "Then you Jack Bauer them into giving you all their secrets", referring to the lead character on the popular FOX TV series 24, which also has several sub-plots involving Islamic extremist terrorists. The TV show playing in Moe's tavern also looks suspiciously like 24. Also, an actress who starred in fourth season of this show, Shohreh Aghdashloo, voiced Mina, Bashir's mother.
Comic Book Guy throwing the hammer into the video screen displaying Steve Mobs is a parody of the commercial which first introduced the Macintosh during the 1984 Super Bowl. The commercial is itself entitled 1984 as it was an allusion to the book/movie of the same name by George Orwell.
All the products in the Mapple store, Lisa's mypod, and Steve Mobs are all obvious parodies to the Apple company and its CEO Steve Jobs. Also, one of Mobs' employees mentions that they fired him and rehired him years later, playing on the fact Steve Jobs was out of Apple for some years.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The title of this episode is a play on the title of the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
