Episode Summary

The Canine Mutiny
Marge lets Bart read her junk mail and he comes across a credit card application. He fills it out with the name "Santo's Little Helper," his dog. When the application is approved and he gets the card, he starts spending like a madman, not realizing how credit works. He even buys a collie named Laddie, this dog is so perfect, that he neglects his old dog. Eventually the repo men come to take back everything he bought, including one $1200 dog. Bart gives him Santa's Little Helper instead of Laddie, but he soon misses his old dog and grows tired of the new one. Laddie gets local attention when he saves a baby's life, so Bart gives him to the police and then searches for his old dog, and finds him living with a blind man. The blind man calls the police when Bart breaks into his place. When the police come, Laddie finds pot on the blind guy. Bart leaves with Santa's Little Helper as the police smoke the blind guy's stash.moreless

  • The Canine Mutiny

Bart gets a credit card, and gets many things- including a dog that can do amazing tricks. But soon repo men come and want all things back- including the dog. But Bart actually gives them Santa's Little Helper. Later he feels guilty so he tries to get Santa's Little Helper back. In the end he does and is very happy.

Not one of my favorites, in fact, I find it the weakest of the season. I was called out for that opinion on a different site though, but my opinion has not changed- I find it boring, simply boring. Grade- Cmoreless
  • American debt crisis portrayed

So we have here another very watchable and enjoyable episode that although it is not very funny (I didn't laugh much actually) keeps you watching. This is a preview of what is to come in upcoming seasons. The probabilites of something like this happenning to you are high, and that for me, helps the episode, since I prefer the much more down to earth storylines than the completely insane.

Bart still amazes me, he is always doing bad things. But you know, I like him. He most of the times learns a good lesson, although by the next episode he has forgotten it.moreless

  • Bart gets a credit card.

Bart fills out a credit card application under the name Santa's Little Helper. He uses the card to shop for catalogue items and purchases a collie named Laddie. The dog is well trained and the family love him. When Bart fails to pay the balance on his card, all his items are reposessed. When they collect the dog, he tells them Santa's Little Helper is the dog he purchased and he is taken away. Tiring of Laddie, Bart wants Santa's Little Helper back. He gives Laddie to the police and finds Santa's Little Helper in the hands of a blind man named Mr. Mitchell. Bart breaks into the blind man's house to steal his dog, but he traps Bart in a closet and calls the police. They come with Laddie who takes an immediate liking to Mr. Mitchell. Laddie is in fact, sniffing out a bag of marijuana. Bart goes home with his dog and the police have a party. This is an episode that touched my heart. It was good to see the love that Bart had for his dog. As a dog lover, this episode really spoke to me.moreless
  • A very sad episode when Bart gives Santas Little Helper away, but when they are reunited it is very heart-warming

After a computer mix-up, Santa's Little Helper gets his own credit card, which Bart uses to buy tons of expensive gadgets and gifts from catalogs. One of his many purchases is Laddie, a supremely bred dog that can do tricks, save lives, and use a toilet. The Simpson family falls madly in love with their new dog, nearly forgetting all about Santa's Little Helper, who can barely stand up, much less do a back flip (one of Laddie's many uncanny skills). When the credit card company gets wind of Bart's fraudulent purchases, however, repo men take back everything he bought, including the amazing new pet. In an act of extreme disloyalty, Bart convinces them to take Santa's Little Helper instead. At first no one really notices that Santa's Little Helper is gone, but Bart grows bored with his perfect new dog. He gives Laddie to Chief Wiggum and searches all over town for Santa's Little Helper. He finally finds his old pet serving as a seeing-eye dog for a blind man. Bart tries to steal Santa's Little Helper back, but the blind man catches him and turn him over to the police. When the police arrive with Laddie, the miracle dog sniffs the blind man and finds a stash of marijuana. Bart and Santa's Little Helper are allowed to go home while the cops detain the blind man and sample his goods.moreless

  • TRIVIA (5)

  • QUOTES (10)

    • (Bart searches for Santa's Little Helper.)
Reverend Lovejoy: Mmm, yes I remember Satan's Little Helper littering the rectory with his dirt, bitting me in the apse.
Agnes Skinner: He unholied the holy water!
Bart: That's him all right. I'll be happy to take him off your hands.
Reverend Lovejoy: Oh, I'm afraid that's impossible, Bart. He's no longer among us.
Bart: (Gasps) You didn't crucify him?
Reverend Lovejoy: (Laughs) No. He's safely with one of our parishioners. I'll give you his address if you'll like.
Agnes Skinner: And then buy somethin' or get out! Angel.

    • Bart: Hello?
Creditor: Hello, Mr. Halper. I'm calling from MoneyBank Credit Services Department. I was wondering if you had a chance to read the threatening letter we sent you?

    • Bart: He's trained to do all sorts of stuff. He can herd sheep and perform CPR.
Marge: (reads from the manual) Some call it the dog that never sleeps, though it actually does -- while jogging!
Homer: Gee, that dog has more education than I do!

    • Lisa: Hey, this says we should feed him lots of eggs and olive oil to ensure a glossy coat.
Homer: Oh yeah. A dog like this you have to feed everyday.

    • Homer: You gave both dogs away?? You know how I feel about giving!

    • Groundskeeper Willie: Yeah I bought your little mutt...And I 'ate him. I 'ate his little face, I 'ate his guts, and I 'ate the way he's always barking. So I geeeve him to the church
Bart: Oh, you hate him so you gave him to the church?
Groundskeeper Willie: Aye. I also 'ate the mess he left on the rug. You heard me!

    • Marge: Homer, are you wearing a tie to impress Laddie?
Homer: Do you think he noticed?

    • Comic Book Guy: Oh, pardon me, Santos, if that is your real name, Bart Simpson, but your phony credit card is no good here. Now make like my pants, and split.

    • Bart: (about Santa's Little Helper) I guess I was the only one who loved him.
Milhouse: You got that right! Remember that time he ate my goldfish, and you told me I never I had any goldfish? Then why did I have the bowl, Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

    • Homer: Well, crying isn't gonna bring him back ... unless your tears smell like dog food. So you can either sit there crying and eating can after can of dog food until your tears smell enough like dog food to make your dog come back, or you can go out there and find your dog.

  • NOTES (3)

    • We find out the baby with the one eyebrow, and who is Maggie's rival, is named Gerald in this episode.

    • Blackboard Joke: A fire drill does not demand a fire.
Couch Gag: Grampa Simpson is sleeping on the couch and the family folds Grampa into the couch and sits down as if nothing happened.

    • Milhouse is seen with a dog in the park that looks a lot like his plush toy called Puppygoogoo.
