  • Its another classic episode.

    9.9
Its also one of the best episodes of SMDM -second season. It goes into a sci-fi plot. The idea to introduce robots(androids) vs bionic people is really good.It will more developed with the episodes of BW/SMDM and the fembots.

Dr. Chester Dolenz ,the robot maker is back to exact his revenge. This time he creates a robotic duplicate of Oscar Goldman. This android seems to be perfect obviously better than the first one("Day of the robot"). Dolenz kidnaps the real Oscar Goldman and replaces him with the fake Oscar. The plan they have is really good.Oscar robot orders Steve Austin to test a high-security system at an important establishment. This episode really contains full action and Steve uses his bionics to save his life.At the end there is a massive fight between Steve and the Oscar robot who is as strong as he is: a real match. The odd melody that is played when the robot appears calls my attention and at the beginning we see the faceless robot like the first robot from the first season and we could get frightened one more time. The final is also good and frightening (watching the head of the robot on the ground)Excellent episode from the 70s.moreless
  • Dolenz pushes his luck one step too far.

    9.5
A strange and familliar little man tinkers like a concerned parent with a mannequin like figure, fiddling around until he's satisifed, a robotic figures turns around to face the camera, hey presto, it's Oscar Goldman, Dolenz style, kickstarting a memorable battle of cat and mouse which pushes Steve to extremes even he didn't consider possible. After smugly gaining entry to Oscar's office, Dolenz knocks the big guy senseless with a stungun, replacing him with a ghastly lump of metal who looks strangely like Richard Anderson... Return Of The Robot Maker draws parrallels with a multitude of SMDM/BW "doppleganger" stories, so the competition is fierce to keep the viewer from yawning. Here, the phrase "classic" can rightfully be applied, good brisk direction, with an air of wry solemnity built into another rip roaring showdown ("kill him my boy!") leaves a strong aura of satisfaction, the kind of episode can that can be watched over and over without ever becoming dull. Of a higher class.moreless
  • Evil Giuseppi makes an Oscar doll.

    8.3
From the moment we see a cheerful Dr. Dolenz come home and fit the facemask upon his newest robotic creation we get the feeling this might be a special episode, but... for the next 30 minutes nothing else happens.

Dr. Chester Dolenz is like an evil Giuseppi with one obsession : to make a perfect robot. For this 3rd appearence he created a double of OSI-boss, Oscar Goldman. The goal is to steel top secret information with Steve Austin's death as a bonus.

The robot maker-episodes stand synonymous for humour, even slapstick. Sadly there is non of it here. Even the unnecessary introduction of a 'Q from 007'-like character, Barney, doesn't help. This is an early Mark Frorst script, but it's a drag till the last 5 minutes when a massive battle errupts between Steve and the robot Oscar. A never before seen confrontation.

Richard Anderson is fantastic as he pics up all the small android mannerisms and fully goes for it in the big finale.

Still, it's a much to early goodbye for the robotmaker when he gets taken away, never to be seen again.

In todays television he would just be called upon to switch sides and work for the Office Of Scientific Intelligence...moreless
