From the offset this looks a very promising episode and it delivers on all fronts.

In this back to basics story (written by D.C. Fontana, famed for her Star Trek scripts), Steve Austin has to go back in space to save the crew of the ill-fated Athena mission. While being marooned in Spacelab (!), Steve's bionic implants start to malfunction due to radiation.

All ends well when the young first female astronaut, Kelly Wood, brings them all back down to earth.

In many ways this is a historical episode. In a reality documentary style (with comments by Jules Bergman), it shows the NASA-space program and its istallations while a big amount of the action takes place in and around SKYLAB. Accompanied by new spacey-tracks in the music score, and real film footage, this installment guaranties a great trip round our home planet.

TV-History in the making, the part of the girl-astronaut is played by Mrs. Lee Majors, the now (in)famous, Farah Fawcett (Pre-Charlie's Angels).

Sadly (happily) weightlessness was not an important production-issue, which prevents the scalpels from floating off and the BIG hair from... bouncing.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Although both Athena 1 and Athena Rescue were supposed to be docked at Skylab, the model always showed only one Apollo-style capsule and service module on the Multiple Docking Adapter.

  • QUOTES (0)

  • NOTES (3)

    • This episode was inspired by the 1969 motion picture, Marooned, about three astronauts stranded in space. Marooned, in turn, was originally a novel by Martin Caidin, who also wrote the novel Cyborg, which was the basis for this series.

    • Making several extended cameo appearances is Jules Bergman as himself, covering the Athena launches. Bergman was Science Editor for the ABC News division from 1961 until his death in 1987. Although he covered a range of science stories, Bergman always appeared in ABC's coverage of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions and was best known because of those appearances.

    • This episode united Lee Majors with his off-screen wife Farrah Fawcett. The couple were married a year earlier in July of 1973.
