The Songbag

Show Summary

The Song Bag is an educational children's musical series from the 70s, a public television production hosted by Boston folk singer and teacher Tony Saletan. Each episode of The Song Bag opens with Saletan singing "Let's see what's in the song bag," after which he introduces a variety of folk songs and classic ballads, including songs in both English and Spanish. Saletan was a pioneer of public media and original host of many seminal educational programs for children. He was a key player in the folk music revival of the 60s and 70s, teaching traditional folk songs to artists such as Pete Seeger. Many of Saletan's television programs for children were intended to be viewed in classrooms as a way to help teachers encourage appreciation for folk music and teach children to sing folk songs and ballads. An associated album and musical compilation of songs from the show was also released, Song Bag with Tony Saletan, along with a teacher's guide and songbook.
