The Sooty Show

Show Summary

The Sooty Show is about Sooty, Sweep, Soo, Little Cousin Scampi (when he joined in 1991) and Matthew. Matthew took over The Sooty Show in 1976 from his father Harry, after he wasn't keeping so well. At this time Matthew was given a choice whether to take a job as the temporary presenter at first, but then he bought the rights and he became Sooty's new right hand man. Here's some background information on the characters. Harry Corbett was the first person to 'invent' Sooty. Harry bought a bear from a shop on a wet family holiday to keep his children entertained, then he became good at it and went onto Talent Night. He then was a huge sucess with Sooty, and then got slots on the BBC for Sooty and him. After all that he got a television series The Sooty Show. Then he didn't keep so well, and on Christmas Day in 1976 he had a heart attack, it was then that his son Matthew was given the chance to take over The Sooty Show temporary until Harry recovered. Matthew then bought the rights to Sooty and Matthew owned him. Harry wasn't happy though because when Harry did recover he wanted to make a comeback with Sooty. Majorie (Harry's wife) and Matthew didn't think it would be good for his health if he returned, so it was agreed in the end he would to a small amount of shows. On the 17th of August 1989 Harry sadly died of a heart attack. Matthew Corbett was the second presenter of The Sooty Show, from 1976 to 1992, then they moved onto their new series Sooty & Co, that ran until 1998.Then sadly Matthew retired. Orginally, Matthew was part of Rod, Jane and Matthew, which today is known as Rod, Jane and Freddy. He left them to be the presenter of The Sooty Show. The Sooty Show was brilliant because of its humour for young or old people and also Matthew had a great way of educating children aswell, such as safety with matches. Matthew also wrote The Sooty Show and Sooty & Co. Matthew was great because of him telling of all his talents to Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Scampi and then they would ask him to do one of his talents and he would fail! Matthew did a great job of taking over from Harry, and one thing Matthew does have a talent for is being a great sucess. He certainly kept the standards up like Harry. One last thing, it was a sad day when he retired. Matthew is the oldest of the group, and looks after Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Little Cousin Scampi. Mostly poor Matthew would fall victim to Sooty's magic spells or anything that went wrong! Matthew would often boast aswell and Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Scampi would have to prove him wrong! Sooty the little magical yellow bear.Sooty is only five-years old. He was the first character that created the craze for himself (of course, Sooty) Sooty is always getting up to tricks and making magic spells with his magic wand. He is very clever, and can sometimes be cleverer than adults! Sweep is the youngest of the group at the age of four-years old. Sweep loves bones and sausages, and also Sweep is not very bright unless he is talking about bones or sausages. Soo is also five-years old, and is the most reliable out of Sooty, Sweep and Little Cousin Scampi. Soo is a panda, and is the only girl out of the programme who appears regularly. Little Cousin Scampi made a appearance in a 1990 episode called 'Little Cousin Scampi' this is when we found out that Scampi was Sooty's cousin and we also found out he was very naughty! Scampi actually started appearing regularly in the 1991 episode called 'Return of Scampi'.moreless

This is the one that started it off. Some say it's the best and others may say it went downhill when Sooty & Co relaunced the format in 1993. But it took me time to get around and do this but here's the summary of The Sooty Show.

History was in the making back in July 1948. Harry Corbett who is the nephew of Harry Ramsden (the owner of the famous fish and chips shops). During a wet and miserable family holiday in Blackpool; Harry Corbett, a engineer and amateur magician from Bradford. Harry brought a glove puppet teddy bear for 7s 6d. in a store on North Pier, and at that moment Children's Television was born.

Soon after Harry and his bear make his first appearance on BBC's Talent Night. He got massive success from his performance, but was as to make his puppet different from others. After several tries in changing the puppet, Harry took some soot from the chimney and blackened the eyes and the nose. When one of Harry's friends said 'It looks a bit Sooty' and so a legend was born.

Sooty and Harry were regulars on Saturday Special until 1955 when the BBC give Sooty his own shoe imaginatively titled 'The Sooty Show'

But Sooty could never do it without the help of friends. Let alone puppeteers in practise to make Sooty a real person and not apart of Harry's Hand. Sooty got best friends to help with his normal Mischief. Sweep join Sooty in 1957 and in 1964, Sooty had a girlfriend called Soo the panda. They were never allow to touch, kiss as even know at the time there was a lot of newspaper fuss that the BBC weren't allowing Sooty to have a girlfriend with headlines like 'No Sex for Sooty', 'BBC wont allow Girlfriend for Sooty' and 'No Love for Sooty' they draw the line that they weren't allow to touch.

BBC cancels The Sooty Show for only one reason, The New head of Children's TV of that time wanted a blone-hair bimbo to replace Harry Corbett. Such a bad decision made by her and Harry, Sooty & Co went to Thames Television were they were treated like the super-stars they are.

They put The Sooty Show in Colour and this was the best way to show Sooty's attics.

With Matthew Corbett taking over from this father when he suffers from a heart attack. Matthews buys the whole company for £20,000 and at that time a great profit of 7s 6d (46p).

Harry Corbett sadly passes away in 1989, with him spending his final days entraining children, he die happily and now we remember him and say 'Bye, Bye, Everybody, Bye, Bye'.

In The 90's, Scampi join the show, while Thames Television loses Sooty Show franchise, this action ends the much-loved and long-running cult children's television show. When The Sooty Show ended here, its run in Oz came to a end on ABC TV.

The Sooty Show is still much-loved by childhood, adults, grand-children and possibly Great grand-children. It's the reason why we are all here and Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Scampi lives on at Granada Television in a second hand junk shop that they called 'Sooty & Co'.moreless
