  • One of the second season's best episodes and a surprising outcome that no one could have expected.

    8.8
In this episode, written by Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green and directed by Allen Coulter, Janice and Richie are celebrating their wedding. We see the transformation of Janice into a mob wife and Tony isnt to happy about it. Tony is getting fed up with Richie. Janice is too and it leads her to finally killing him. It is a well directed episode because it surprises us when we see Janice pull the trigger. We could have guessed that Richie was going to meet his demise by the end of the season but we never knew that Janice would be the one to cause it. One of the second season's best episodes.moreless
  • Hey Hey I saved the World Today

    10
This is my favorite episode of the Sopranos and I also feel it is the most classic episode of all. It has all of the elements that we love about the show comedy, drama, action, and a totally random killing.

Janice, (who will always remain one of the greatest sources of entertainment) has come full circle from showing up as a hippie and then changing into the quintessential mob wife to Richie Aprile. The wedding is getting closer and tensions between the couple are growing. Janice knows the glory period of their relationship is coming to and end and the regular "mob husband"/"mob wife" will begin.

Meanwhile Tony is trying to break things off with Irena but it isn't going the way he would like. She is the first in a long line of people to threaten to kill hirself if Tony does not fulfill their wishes. Then, in fact she does try and kill herself.

Of course, the completly interesting and unexpected death of Richie is what catches most peoples eye with this episode.

The episode is great for so many reasons. The best part of the epsiode is the way that Tony has to run around all over town and put out fire after fire. He helps Irena, then Janice, and genuinelly tries to do the right thing with Carmella but it is stifled when she finds out about Irena.

My favorite moment is a the end when Carmella threatens to kill herself if she doesnt get to go to Italy with Rosalie Aprile. Tony is left alone and the music fades up. Hey hey I saved the world today. Which he did, but like a superhero no one will ever know.moreless

Richie finally pushes Tony to the limit and Tony begins to plan for his removal. Tony finds that breaking up with his Russian girlfriend is more complicated than he thought. Janice takes matters into her own hands after a quarrel with Richie. Janice shooting Richie was just down right funny. I never saw that coming in a million years. I am surprised that the writers used this episode as far as the set up to the finale, I think this episode would have worked very well as a finale, minus a few other things. I really wonder what the finale is going to entail. The Season Two storyarch of Richie Aprile came to an end tonight, the only other thing I would like to see happen is whats going to happen with BP and the feds. I did have my expectation level up a little high with the 9.50 rating at this site, which was clearly only given for the shock value of Janus shooting Richie. Tonys mom is back by herself, I hope that doesnt become another big thing. Overall, it was a good episode but it wasn't a blockbuster.moreless
  • Un cuñado menos. Un amigo traidor. Expectativas familiares.

  • Great way to end the season.

    9.5
When watching this episode on DVD I didn't realize that it was the season finale. After reading about how originally the Sopranos was supposed to only be twelve episodes this the reason for a shorter episode season than the standard twenty six. The again HBO is not one to conform and I am happy about that. The only thing I didn't like was that for only twelve episodes the price is relatively high. That being said its still worth the money in terms of value and entertainment. You can watch it over and over and pickup the little things that make this a great first season. In terms of the story of the final episode we see the storyline of Richie and Tony finally drawing to a close but how it ends totally surprised me. I am satisfied with this ending. Looking forward to season two.moreless

    • Tony: See obviously, Richie, you're fucking deaf, I told you ten times, then I find out you're still dealing blow on those garbage routes.
Richie: For that I'm losing a fucking bid?
Tony: Next time you'll find yourself in the back of one of your trucks.

    • Carmela: In a year, tops, you're gonna have to accept a gumar.
Janice: Oh, yeah? Well I'd like to see a gumar who's gonna let him hold a gun to their head when they fuck.
Carmela: You let him hold a gun to your head during sex?
Janice: Yeah. Well, if that gets him off, I mean, it's not any different than garter belts and nurse's uniforms.
Carmela: Well, it's a gun, Janice. I thought you were a feminist.
Janice: Usually he takes the clip out.

    • Carmela: What the hell happened over there?
Tony: Janice decided to go back to Seattle.
Carmela: You're kidding. What about Richie? He must be devastated.
      Tony: Richie's gone.
Carmela: What do you mean gone?
      Tony: Gone.
      Carmela: Where?
Tony: Carmela, after 18 years of marriage, don't make me make you an accessory after the fact.
Carmela: An accessory after the...(realizes) Holy shit!

    • Carmela: You're putting me in a position where I'm feeling sorry for a whore who fucks you?! You know what's even stranger-for a second I believed you.

    • Janice: What did you do with...[Richie's body]?
Tony: (deadpan) We buried him... on a hill... overlooking a little river... with pine cones all around.
      Janice: You did?
Tony: (irritated) Come on, Janice! What the fuck do you care what we did with him?

    • Tony: What is that?
Irina: Chicken Soup for the Soul.
Tony: You should read Tomato Sauce for your Ass. It's the Italian version.

    • Tony: How many jobs have you had in this lifetime?
Janice: Enough to know I don't want another one.

    • Silvio: (on Richie) I genuinely don't think there's anything to gain by keeping him around.

    • Tony: (to Richie) Those who want respect, give respect.

    • (Tony mentions he's breaking it off with Irina)
Dr. Melfi: I'm interested in why you're ending it.
Tony: What do you mean why? Isn't that what I'm supposed to do? Aren't you telling me that all the time in here?
Dr. Melfi: I don't think I've ever passed judgment on your sex life or any patient's sex life.

  • NOTES (3)

    • The German episode title is "Ein schnelles Ende", meaning "A Quick End".

    • Music in this episode:
"I Saved the World Today" by Annie Lennox; "The Memory Remains" by Metallica

    • In the DVD commentary, the director makes mention that in order to prolong the shock of Richie Aprile being shot, he had the chair rigged so that it would teeter on two legs for a second before it fell back to the floor. This rigging is clearly seen, however. Look for the hand holding the chair.
