Episode Summary

In this film essay, the celebrated Australian writer and feminist Germaine Greer argues against the conventional wisdom that in art it is the female body that represents the primary object of visual pleasure. According to Greer, a far more important figure in the history of Western art is that of the young male. From ancient Greece to the present, whether representing Apollo, Dionysus or Cupid, a winged angel, a soldier or martyr, the young male has carried an erotic charge that has been suppressed by men and women alike. To illustrate her thesis Greer takes us to Paris, Florence and Rome, citing examples from Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Titian and Van Dyck. She also interviews the boy band Westlife and its manager Louis Walsh, visits a nude life-painting class for observations from students on male nudity, and checks out an underwear shoot for Cosmopolitan. She goes on to examine the shift in social values that occurred in the 19th century that resulted in the elevation of the female nude, so that the boy became strangely invisible in art, not least because of confusions between art and pornography.moreless
