The Space Sentinels

Show Summary

Three young humans were taken from Earth thousands of years ago. On an advanced alien planet, they were imbued with special powers and trained to defend and protect the Earth and its surrounding space. Returned to Earth in modern times, they act as superheroes, based in a spacecraft which is normally hidden inside the caldera of a dormant volcano. The trio includes Astraea, an African woman who has the power to assume the form of any animal. Hercules is a cave man (originally barechested in a loin cloth) who has super-strength. Mercury is a Chinese man given super-speed. All three were given rocket belts for flight and they're supervised, advised and dispatched by a sentient supercomputer on their ship, Sentinel One, who appears in the form of a floating disembodied head (similar to but pre-dating the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers). Completing the list of characters was a small robot, Maintenance Operator, usually called "MO" (pronounced Moe). Able to hover and fly and equipped with four arms and two legs, MO was responsible for the repair and maintenance of the ship and is infatuated with Astraea. The show's producers say his resemblance to the robots in the movie Silent Running was intentional. The show's main cast reflected the various races of the main characters. African-American Dee Timberlake and Korean-American Evan Kim joined George DiCenzo as the voices behind the cels. The show concept has been compared to the Green Lantern Corps from the Green Lantern comic books published by DC comics. The show was originally called The Young Sentinels, but NBC thought the name was too generic, leading to a title change late in the season that emphasized their space background. However, because all episodes had already been produced, dialog throughout the series refers to them as Young Sentinels. For the 2006 DVD release, all of the episodes were given the revised Space Sentinels opening title sequence rather than the original that the earlier episodes had.moreless
