The Ark carries the last of humanity in search of a new home. However, sometime after the ship was launched the Ark's crew were killed in an accident, leaving the surviving humans sealed inside self-contained biospheres with nobody to guide the ship. Over time these humans forgot that they were aboard a spaceship, and do not realise they are heading towards a sun.

The Starlost was created by Harlan Ellison (who disowned the series, and was credited by his pseudonym Cordwainer Bird) and was produced by Glen-Warren Productions, Limited in association with CTV Television.moreless

    "Terrible"
Some shows are watchable despite poor writing because of high production values. Some shows are watchable because their casts and good writing overcome poor production values. The Starlost combined bad acting and an inadequate budget with poor scripts from writers who really didn't seem to understand science fiction. Despite the early involvement of well known American science fiction writers Harlan Ellison and Ben Bova the results were mediocre, and Ellison would disown the series before it even aired. Even the prescense of Americn actor Keir Dullea of 2001: A Space Oddysey fame in the lead role of Devon and guest appearances by Barry Morse, John Colicos, and Star Trek's Walter Koenig weren't enough to make it work and the series was cancelled after 16 disappointing episodes. More than 30 years later the only real reason to watch the series is to see an early attempt at producing a drama series in Canada for the international market.moreless

Anybody under 40 will not be able to appreciate this show. It was made before cable TV and Star Wars. It was originally set up to be "thee" next sci fi series but no network would pick it up and the budget was reduced to almost zero. Too bad. Great concept. Back in those days scifi was not considered profitable. It was considered Saturday morning kids entertainment. At that time, Star Trek had not reached its potetial in syndication and Star Wars would come out in another 4 years. Had this show come out after the Star Wars hysteria, then the budget would have been bigger and we'd be talking about this show in the same way we talk about classic Star Trek. If you watch it you'll see the stories aren't bad. And back then sci fi had to depend on storylines and not special effects. I hope someday somebody will see the potetial and remake it. The concept had potential and it might be a candidate for a remake. Unfortunately devolved into a snoozefest from the moments the opening words of dialog were uttered.

First saw this as child and was fascinated by it, but 30 years later watching this is beyond painful! It will put you into a coma if youre not careful. Not even actors like Kier Dullea, Barry Morse (Professor Bergman from Space 1999) and Walter Koenig (Chekov from Star Trek) could breathe life into this corpse. The actors appear to be stoned all the time, drifting from scene to scene with all the emotion of a robot. The chroma key blue screen effects are horrid beyond belief. The opening theme sequence is the best part of any episode - after that its a slow painful descent into something thats hard to describe. Picture the classroom scenes in Ferris Buellers Day Off where the students are drooling all over their desks during Ben Steins economics class - its that dull.

This was so bad that Harlan Ellison changed his screen name to Cordwainer Bird in the credits to try and distance himself from this godawful thing. Maybe Starlost explains why Canadians are depressed slothlike creatures.

Starlosts only saving grace is that it makes nearly every other scifi series look great in comparison.

If Starlost were shown to terrorist prisoners at Guantanmo Bay, human right groups would call it torture - theyd be right on the money.moreless
