A The Strain Community
Sunday 10:00 PM on FX (Returning August 28, 2016)

FX's vampire outbreak will continue to spread: The network has renewed horror drama The Strain for a 13-episode second season that will debut in 2015.

The move comes as no surprise, as The Strain is cable's top new series of 2014 among adults 18 to 49. The first episode drew 12.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched series premiere in FX's history.

From Guillermo del Toro and Lost co-creator Carlton CuseThe Strain stars Corey Stoll as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the CDC division in New York who's called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak that, as we know now, causes people to lose their genitals and grow huge, propulsive, blood-sucking stingers in their throats. The series is based on a trilogy of novels written by del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

"We've never had any doubts about The Strain," FX President John Landgraf said in a statement. "Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo, and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale."

Added del Toro: "I am thrilled! Another season to spread the virus!

The Strain airs Sundays at 10pm on FX. Season 1 will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, December 2.

Love this show too but I'd like them to use their new funds for a new season to make the head vampire less visible or more in shadow! It's face is laughable and not scary at all!

This one was never remotely in doubt. Kind of surprised they waited til it aired to renew it for more. The hype and production values all but guaranteed a winner.

I like it so far, but whether I watch it next season depends on what happens in the last half of this season.

It's a no brainer.

Even if the show wouldn't be entertaining in its own right, after True Blood finale it will be *the* vampire show next year.

This is the right move.

I'll keep watching, it's very slow paced though, but each week the final scene usually does enough to keep me coming back, like Eph and Nora being reunited in Abraham's basement this week.

So are they going to drag out the story for a few seasons where the government & the public at large don't know/recognize what's happening, or will social media get wind of things like people saw with the ME attacking people & the FBI agents in broad daylight (or eclipse light?) and other authorities joining the fight with Eph & Setrakian? If something like this were to actually happen and cell phone videos of creatures the lamestream media would probably ignore them until one such creature showed up in front of their cameras.

I'll give it a full season, but I don't think it will be able to keep up for multiple seasons.

Oh good lord, no. I assumed that there was some light at the end of this shitty acting and writing tunnel, but no, I was apparently just seeing a flicker of light due to the stroke that I must have suffered to keep watching this.

So they are what 3 or 4 days into the "virus"? If they are going to season 2 at some point it is going to have to go beyond manhattan. If not thenI think it loses a bit. But who knows, it is better than pretty much all supposedly scary shows out there right now. The writing is at times poor and they seem to like to hover a bit. But it is better than TWD.

When the TWD is on it's game, it's far better than this. It is better than most of what was on the second half of last season though.

But that is what, maybe 2 or 3 episodes per season? I will reserve my final judgement till the end of the season. But the good episodes of this show is for me better than the majority of TWD since season one.

IMHO TWD is a amazing. Its way better than any zombie show could ever hope to be, but how many times can you watch the same things play out? Its become mostly refried beans.
The Strain is still fresh.

I quit TWD. Seen it all before..

Agreed. I am likely to start passing up TWD episodes until I read they are worth it on here. Which after the end last season, I just don't see them being many watchable ones left.

Last season that was the case. I liked the second half of season 2 and the first half of season 3 better than this. TWD has had great episodes, with many being in that first half of season 3, while The Strain at it's best so far has only been pretty good. It's possible it could get better, but we'll see.

Fair enough.

Maybe I like it because it is fun and new rather than repeated ad nauseam.

I see this as having way more potential for diversity in stories due to the diversity of the various vampires. Way more so than TWD. But that I imagine is largely the writers fault.

"Occultation" comes even before "The First Night" in the book. Its the 10th of 36 chapters.

Does it ever go beyond the area of Manhattan?

You know, I forgot about the chapter that takes place in Nazareth Pennsylvania. Its the last chapter before the epilogue. (I don't know how the hell they plan to get 20 more chapters into 7 episodes.)

I won't spoil Nazareth, but I will say it has to do with "The Ancients" of vampire lore. Theyre referenced in True Blood and "The Vamp Chronicles".

Please tell me they sent the entire writing team in Eichorst's white room/ food pantry before doing that... Just reassure me S1 writers won't have anything to do with S2...

Great news, although expected. I'm loving the show and I'm expecting it will get better. Now, this week: Mr. Quinlan.
