A really mixed bag for me. The story is very good, and gripping, and unusual for such a show; it plays sort of like an amped-up Afterschool Special in primetime (blissfully without any of the School Counselor approach that so often comes with such things). The choice of such a low-key and amiable actor as Aidman for the role of the father was interesting, but--like the suddenness with which Paul takes up his bludgeon at the start--perhaps raises a question or two of motivation (I mean, it hardly seems like the kid is being bludgeoned himself into his desperate straits). And speaking of casting, his sister often seems like she should be standing on a Rose Parade float and waving; her rapport with her "brother," especially in the talking scene they have together in the middle, fell considerably short of being convincing. And all that badinage about Women's Lib between mother and daughter grew tiresome quickly, and seemed to have little point. But the final moments, with Paul dragging the sword along, and no real way of predicting just what he might do next, were powerful indeed.
One further point which I found a bit unsettling (I suppose is the word for it): Keller expresses a great deal of sympathy for Paul at the end. Of course, perhaps he was simply being as kind as possible to the kid in his effort to "talk him in off the ledge"; however, it also played a bit as though, for somebody posh and Harvard-bound, resorting to murder was, at least to a slight extent, an understandable decision. ;)moreless
