  • Surprisingly dark for a 1970s crime drama.

    8.5
Most cop shows feature an episode where one of the main characters falls in love with a witness under his protection, but this episode of "Streets of San Francisco" mixes that cliche up a bit by having the witness in question be a hooker and serving up a villain who has a bit more depth and psychological underpinnings than most. The killer in "First Day of Forever" seems more in line with the sickos tracked down on "CSI" and "Criminal Minds" every week than the usual array of bad guys seen on TV in the 70s. He's a twisted soul, targeting sex workers he sees as "unclean" and carving their names on the base of a crucifix he keeps in his office. Yowza. But don't expect much more psychosis than that. And of course, what nails him is a fingerprint match. Good old police work, the kind Mike Stone approves of.

We see Stone work in a very driven mode on this case, not willing to put it on the back burner simply because it involves hookers. And Steve comes around after getting to know the surviving victim that the cops are protecting.

Sure, it's a little corny (Steve's entire Act IV speech about starting your life over), but it is also dark and atmospheric, particularly in the opening and closing scenes.moreless
