  • The seeds for the 90's Batman are laid here...

First up, whoever thought Adam West couldn't do a serious Batman needs only watch this darkest of all non-Legion/Darkseid eps. For the first time in any Batman broadcast, the commonly-known story of how Bruce Wayne became the Batman is told. An earlier Super Friends series had mentioned Robin's circus past, and the 60's live-action had mentioned the Waynes' murders, but not as their reason for being.

First of all, Scarecrow's thugs refer to our hero as 'The Batman'. Next, we have Batman's nightmares coming right out of Crime Alley. Add in such touches as WW appearing as Diana Prince, and you already have a good episode. But West portrays Batman's torment so well, you immediately forget that this was the guy blamed for clowning Bats up. I have to believe that the people who made this helped inspire the feel of BTAS, especially when you look at the similar episode also featuring the Scarecrow and Bruce's fears about his parent's murders. As Batman overcomes his one and only fear, smashing the Scarecrow's skull-shaped fear projector, for one brief shining moment the Batman of the Super Friends is a scary avenger of the night.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • This episode marks the only appearance of the Scarecrow in this series.

    • Perhaps an oversight, but Batman drove the Batmobile to the farm where he saved Robin and Wonder Woman, eventually defeating the Scarecrow as well. As the three departed in the Invisible Jet with the rest of the Super Powers Team at the end of the episode, Batman seemed to leave the Batmobile behind.Batman probably radio the Batmobile back to the Batcave after he arrived in the Scarecrow's hideout.

    • Goof: When Robin is propped up on the scarecrow stand, the scene alternates at various times from his having his gloves on to his not wearing the gloves at all.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Batman: (to Scarecrow) Your fear career is over!

    • Prof. Crane: (to Bruce Wayne, referring to Scarecrow) Sooner or later, he's bound to discover the one thing that even frightens Batman and when he does, I fear that the Caped Crusader's fighting days may be numbered.

  • NOTES (4)

    • According to the DVD featurette of The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians: "The Fear" started out as a pilot for a Batman series.

    • JLA Role Call: Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Samurai.

    • This is the first and only time in any SuperFriends series where Batman and Robin are seen as Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, respectively.

    • This episode marks the first time Batman's origin has been told in a medium outside of comics, although there were references to his late parents on the 1960's Batman series.
