  • Four distinguished visitors arrive severally at the castle of the beautiful, widowed Countess Ilona, whom they have not seen for many years. But she has surprises in store for them...

This was actually a two-part story, concluding with the following week's "The Werewolf Reunion". It was the only two-part show in this brief series and it was by far the best. Billie Whitelaw, the real-life wife of scriptwriter Robert Muller, gives a superb performance as the enigmatic Countess, once the highest-paid courtesan in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until her various rich lovers arranged for her to be married off to a notoriously dissolute nobleman. He proved a brute and a pervert as well as a drunkard and womaniser, and then was reported to have died. But was it an accident, was it a heart attack or was it, as a persistent rumour suggests, lycanthropy that he died of? The men who arranged Ilona's disastrous marriage arrive at her castle "in the remotest corner of that part of my country which the prudent traveller never visits", and find her intent on revenge. TV shows are rarely scary, but this one, without any graphic detail, really was.moreless

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Countess Ilona: [to Magda]: Lock your door and window tonight. Whatever you see, you did not see it; and whatever you hear is just the wind, howling in the trees.

    • Zoltan Vincenz: [to Andras]: If you lack the talent to be a miller or a banker, young man, I advise you instead to become a soldier, a hangman or an arms dealer. God always rewards those who keep down the numbers of His greatest failure.

    • Hugo Hoffman: But there is no such thing as a werewolf!
      Dr. Felix Kraus: Precisely.

    • Zoltan Vinczenz: [arriving at the castle]: I'm as hungry as a wolf! [looking around] Ye gods, what a mausoleum - poor Ilona!

    • Hugo Hoffman: I never knew your late husband. Was he - well...was he as appalling as they say?
      Countess Ilona: Worse. Far worse.
Hugo Hoffman: Oh, but surely... no man is without his redeeming features.
      Countess Ilona: No...man. No.

    • Zoltan Vincenz: Bread and murder - man's only two indispensable commodities!
