  • What really happened to Lady Sybil's husband so long ago - and who is prowling in the grounds so late at night?

Cathleen Nesbitt had been a London stage star at the time of the First World War (she was engaged to Rupert Brooke) and was nearing ninety when she starred in the title role of this predictable but effective episode. The notion that the eminent grande dame has ruined the lives of her two sons simply by being a typical aristocratic matriarch of the Victorian era is subversively made clear without being stated in words. The story is a variant on the Jekyll-and-Hyde theme, and the emphasis given to the chameleon in a glass cage owned as a pet by one of the sons should make the twist in the story pretty apparent early on. Denholm Elliott and the playwright John Osborne excellently portray the two sons; both were more famous than Nesbitt, but had the politeness to let her have top-billing.moreless
