  • A repressed, neurotic Englishman (Jeremy Brett) becomes obsessed by a mysterious beauty (Lesley-Anne Down). Is she all she seems? Is he?

A doppelganger story owing more to Poe's William Wilson than to Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, this was one of the series' weaker episodes. However, the casting of Jeremy Brett in the title-role makes good use of that very disturbing quality which he always seemed to have, even as a young man cast as dashing juveniles, and which he exploited so effectively in his great role as Sherlock Holmes. Handsome as he was, Brett never seemed quite right as a straightforward leading man - he was far better at sinister or tormented types, and is both as Mr. Nightingale. This is the only episode of the series where the storyteller fails to impress the the Club Of The Damned's committee - we have, in the closing moments, a hint of the dreadful fate that awaits unsuccessful applicants.
