  • An unhappy child in an affluent but dysfunctional Victorian household acquires a new, unusually large doll, by which she is strangely fascinated.

    9.5
With a plot containing faint echoes both of . Hoffman and Henry James's "The Turn Of The Screw", this was a distinctly disturbing episode, and the large (life-size?) doll which seems so very animated when the child is alone with it may stay in your dreams for a while. The supernatural element is, however, only part of the storyline - why are Mr. Strickland's wives so unhappy? What is behind the keen interest of the coldly observant governess? A twentieth-century audience with a knowledge of once-taboo psychology will soon figure out why the husband is so aloof, and also what the governess is really after. Is the doll a manifestation of subconscious desires? And who exactly is the person seeking membership of the Club of the Damned?moreless
