  • Jack is working undercover as a long-distance lorry driver to try and lure a ring of hijackers. When he finally gets a catch, he sets about infiltrating the operation from the inside. Fair, but not one of my favourite episodes...moreless

There is nothing outstandingly wrong about 'The Placer', but for my personal taste, it doesn't have the shine, the interest or the sheer excitement of many other of the first series episodes.

Maybe one of the problems for me, is that, with Jack working undercover for the whole duration, there is very little of the trademark Regan / Carter banter. I don't mind more varied storylines, but I did miss it in this one.

The story is okay, but I wouldn't rank it as one of the 'Sweeney' greats, and it verges on being slightly "bitty" in the middle.

The final, climatic shootout at the power plant raises things a little, but sadly, after an episode that for the most part, I didn't particularly care about, it comes as too little too late, and I find it hard to fully get my teeth out into this final showdown, which is admittedly well shot.

This isn't the worst episode of 'The Sweeney' (there are several in the final season that surely rank lower than this one), but it's definitely not one of my personal favourites of the series. I'll wait until I've (re)watched the whole of series one on DVD before passing judgment, but I feel 'The Placer' might be contender for weakest episode of the season, in my opinion. I give this one 7/10 – and that's for the few good moments and decent finale at the power station.moreless
