  • Working as handymen at Scotland Yard, the Stooges mistakenly receive a case notice and set out to recover a missing diamond.

A reworking of two popular Shemp shorts, "The Hot Scots" and "Crime on their Hands", both from 1948. Although not necessarily as good as either, it still has some great Stooge material. The opening is almost identical to both films, with the gangster footage from "Crime" and the detective footage from "Scots". The funny bits survive, but it's all been done. The highlights are when the Stooges begin searching McGuffey's Cafe for the gangsters and the diamond. They go through Barb Bartay's purse, finding everything from dynamite to a blackjack, and then declare that she is "clean". The scenes where they search dresser drawers and under beds are also chuckling bits. The new ending is fair, but nothing special. OK overall.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • In the original Crime on Their Hands (1948), the part of Muscles was played by Cy Schindell. Schindell died shortly after that film's completion, and in new footage for this short, Joe Palma plays the part. Although Palma tries to hide his face from the camera, the difference between the two actors is quite obvious in some scenes.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Shemp: If there's anymore paper in this yard, I'll eat it.
(A piece of paper falls to the ground)
      Moe: Here comes your lunch.

    • (The Stooges clean out a lady's purse because they believe she has the diamond, but they find nothing.)
      Larry: No diamond.
Moe: Nope, she's as clean as a hound's tooth.
      Shemp: Sorry, lady.
      Bar patron: That's OK, fellas!
      (She bonks their heads together.)

    • Moe: We'll clean up this case like the way we cleaned up this yard. Clean as a whistle. Come on, let's blow! Ha ha. Not bad.
      Larry: Not good.

    • (The Stooges examine a glass of liquid a woman at the cafe is drinking.)
      Moe: It's liquor!
      Larry: She's gettin' shickered.
(Shemp picks up the glass to drink)
      Shemp: I'll do it quicker!

  • NOTES (1)

    • This short is a remake, with stock footage, of the earlier short Crime on Their Hands (1948). Many of the opening scenes set at Scotland Yard are taken from another earlier short, The Hot Scots (1948).
