Episode Summary

They Stooge to Conga

In the most violent short of their career, the Stooges are hired to fix the doorbell in what turns out to be the secret headquarters of some Nazi spies. In the process of "fixing" it, they sink a submarine by using a remote control, subdue the spies, and ruin the whole house in classic Stooge style.

  • Repairmen Stooges find themselves in a nest of Nazi spies.

How would you like to have a climbing spike jabbed through your eye? The Stooges do this (and many other) extremely violent gags in what is probably the most destructive of all their films. They first wreck a whole house, highlights being the radio destruction scene and Moe being pulled through the wall, then the Stooges work on telephone lines, which cover every possible injury from electrocution to the forementioned spike. Finally, the epic end battles with the Nazis are totally crazy, mainly the submarine part, and add even more "explosive" energy to a wild and fast-paced short. Loads of boundless slapstick fun.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • The voice of the game show host on the radio is provided by actor Eddie Laughton.

    • John Tyrell appears in a dual role. He can be seen both as one of Hans' Nazi henchmen and as one of the angry people on the telephone.

    • Goofs:

When Larry lifts the board sign he's wearing over his face to block Moe's punch, his hat accidentally falls off.

A cut in the short when Moe is screwing the pipe threader on Curly's nose.

A jump in the short when Curly's nose is being grinstoned.

A lot of short edits when Moe is getting spiked in the eye, ear, head, etc.

When Curly (actually a dummy) falls off the telephone pole and lands on Moe and Larry, they fall down and Larry lands with the front of his body on the floor. But in the next shot where Curly takes over in place of the dummy, Larry has his back on the floor.

When Curly disconnects the wire that's holding his telephone pole seat, you can immediately hear it hit the floor, but Curly's supposed to be about 30 feet in the air.

When Curly hits Moe and Larry (in their Axis disguises) with a hammer, the lamp behind him falls over.

A jump cut in the picture when Moe shoves the hammer in Curly's mouth.

When the Stooges walk up to the maid standing outside the door, Curly only has a toolbag in his left hand, but in the next shot, a pipe threader is also in his left hand.

When Moe tries to bite Curly's foot during the climbing spike scene, he misses at first.

  • QUOTES (9)

  • NOTES (3)

    • There's recycled footage from a previous short Three Little Sew, And Sews (1939) of a submarine jumping in and out of the sea.

    • Running time: 15 minutes 32 seconds

    • "They Stooge to Conga" has been consistently ranked as the most violent Stooge short of the team's career. In its brief 15½ minutes, Moe manages to get a climbing spike thrust into his ear, scalp, and eye. Plus, he is lucky enough to be pulled through drywall, with a wooden pillar landing on his neck (this was not intentional, as the pillar was real wood). Curly gets his share of abuse, via electrocution, falling off a telephone pole, and severe nose twisting, followed by reshaping.
