Episode Summary

The stooges work as gas station service men who end up running away from three professors on an ice cream truck. After thawing Curly out from sitting in the back of the ice cream truck the boys put on the professors clothes from their stolen luggage. The stooges are mistaken to be the professors by the college who is expecting them and they poorly pose as the professors and sing their famous "Alphabet Song". The real professors show up, but the ladies in the "girls-only" college end up getting their athletic program thanks to the stooges.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • When the basketball bomb explodes and throws the professors over the hedge, dummies have obviously been used in place of the professors.

    • Although the girls refer to Curly by his name during the musical number, they shouldn't have known it since he is masquerading as one of the professors.

    • When Moe instructs the pianist to start playing, we hear the music start. But in the next shot of the class, the pianist isn't playing anymore even though the music continues.

    • The Stooges are obviously lip-synching during the "Swingin' the Alphabet" number, as their mouths don't move correctly several times throughout the song.

    • When Curly first falls asleep, he is smiling. The camera then quickly cuts to the next scene and the smile is suddenly gone.

    • When Duncan announces "Luncheon is served.", the shadow of the boom mike can be seen on the wall above him.

  • QUOTES (11)

    • Moe: What this college needs anyway is athletics. Football!
      Larry: And basketball.
Curly: I can do very nicely with a high ball.

    • Moe: Don't you know it's bad etiquette to reach in front of a person when said person is trying to snag a morsel of food?

    • Student: Is it true that time and space are calculated by the direct ratio of interplanetary magnetism to solar radiation?
(Larry stands there in a daze.)
Moe: What do you think? I think we're gonna have trouble with this dame.

    • Moe: I oughta beat your brains in...and I think I will.

    • Moe: Take it easy, Field Marshall!

    • Moe: You check the battery and you check the tires.
Curly: What are you gonna check?
Moe: I'm gonna check you guys.

    • (Moe slaps Curly. Curly turns to Larry.)
      Curly: Oh! What's the idea?
      Larry: Mistaken identity.
      (Curly looks at Moe.)
      Curly: Hi ya, pal!

    • Benson: The girls need sports, they want sports, and besides, it's good for them!
Mrs. Catsby: I know what's good for the girls!
      Miss Catsby: Oh, mother...
Mrs. Catsby: Yes! In my day, we kept our noses in books and didn't run around dressed like…fan dancers.

    • Mrs. Catsby: Mildew has a lovely student body.
Moe: Yours wouldn't be so bad either if you took off about twenty pounds.

    • (Moe is roasting Curly on a spit over a fire.)
Moe: 20 minutes to the pound. We'll be here a month.

    • Curly: I never heard of such a thing!
Moe: You never heard of what?
Curly: He's gonna get a hamburger with a zipper!

  • NOTES (6)

    • The only Stooges short to have a Stooge's name in the title.

    • This episode was colorized for the Stooged and Confoosed DVD release.

    • This film was rereleased to theaters as part of a compilation feature The Three Stooges Follies (1974).

    • Footage from this film was used in the Stooges compilation feature Stop! Look! And Laugh! (1960).

    • Running time: 17 minutes 37 seconds

    • During one scene, Curly is tied to a revolving spit that is placed over an open fire. He is then "roasted" in order to thaw him out after having slept in an ice cream truck. Future Stooge director Edward Bernds was present during the filming and noticed that Curly's weight was causing a problem. "Curly was so heavy Moe and Larry couldn't turn the crank," Bernds said. The straps holding him slipped and he was hanging directly over the fire. Before they could get him off, he was pretty well seared. Curly was screaming his head off.
