  • The Stooges become prospectors to pay off their girlfriend's debts and accidentally dig up stolen bank loot.

    9.4
One of the Stooges finest westerns. Although this short is a remake of an earlier Sidney & Murray film, the Stooges handle it flawlessly. The Stooges all share roughly the same amount of screen time,a nd do lots of combined routines, such as cutting wood and (unintentionally) throwing dynamite at each other. Dick Curtis and Lynton Brent, both Stooge veterans, are well cast as the villians. The three lovely leading ladies have very little to do, and are just dead weight needed to move the plot. Vernon Dent is pointless in this film as well. But the Stooges comedy carries this film, not the supporting cast.moreless
  • Moe, Larry, and Curly are waiters in a western saloon until they get an idea to go out and pan for gold so they can pay off their sweethearts' father's debt.moreless

Written as the stooges episode #39, this western was a good example of how funny the trio can be. Right from the start, Moe and Larry are in fake mustaches, singing for the bar-goers at the saloon where they work. Curly soon shows up in an old scooter that passes for his horse.

After a few hijinks in the bar were Moe gets a whole mug of beer in his face and Curly gets jet-streamed from a liquor squirter, they decide to leave their job and pan for gold in the outskirts of town. It isn't long before they discover that it's not as easy as it seams with all three of them getting pounded and stabbed with metal tools.

Then, their luck changes when they strike it rich, with bills, coins and bonds!? They don't suspect anything until they crash into a jail and find out the money was stolen.

Overall, this was a very funny episode with plenty of physical slapstick and verbal jokes.moreless

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • During the end chase, it is quite obvious that a stunt double is used for Curly in many scenes.

    • When Curly throws a stone at Moe's head, Moe is holding a match and an unlit stick of dynamite. In the following shot, Moe is suddenly holding a lit stick of dynamite.

    • When Curly has the pot stuck on his head, reflections of the studio lights can be seen.

    • Maxey's cigar disappears when Curly asks him for a beer.

    • When Curly first walks into the saloon, the shadow of the boom mike can be seen in the upper left corner of the screen.

    • When Curly throws a glass of beer to Larry, the glass is clear. But after Larry spills the beer on Moe, and Moe breaks the glass over his head, it is now a non-transparent vessel.

    • Did you notice Curly's left hand after he fell onto the gold tooth in this short? Turns out, the tooth got jammed into the meat on his fist when he fell on it. You can see he's wearing a bandage when the camera pans out after the shot of the tooth.
