Episode Summary

EDIT
The guys arrive in a brick basement on the North Atlantic coast in 1978. It has advanced electrical equipment, and they are attacked by an overalled man. He collapses dead, then gets up and disappears in a cloud of smoke. They go upstairs and are paralyzed by an alien-android disguised as an old woman. The aliens are preparing to steal Earth's oxygen. The Project staff execute a lateral transfer and free the guys. They escape to a seemingly empty town surrounded by a force field and filled with paralyzed townspeople. A young couple, Paul and Joan, find the guys and tell them about the oxygen-stealing plot. Meanwhile the alien androids infiltrate the Project base, seal it off, and start sucking out the oxygen through the Tunnel itself. The guys must destroy the operation at their end. They fight off the androids and use explosives to blow up the alien HQ.moreless

      • Contrary to much of what has been written about the show over the years, it was NOT a commercial failure (its ratings had been respectable) and this was never meant to be the final "Time Tunnel" episode. The show had in fact already been renewed for a second season and a cast & crew "renewal celebration" party held, before the newly appointed head of ABC took a personal and sudden decision to cancel it in favour of the supposedly more "educational" series "Custer Of The West" (which ultimately proved a failure).
The very unsatisfactory "Titanic time-loop" ending mentioned above, which consisted of a series of short clips from the very first episode of "Time Tunnel" (and which is not always shown), was hastily added post-cancellation to give the show as a whole some kind of "ending".
Perhaps the saddest thing was not that "Time Tunnel" ended (it was rapidly degenerating into an "aliens-of-the-week" show in a similar way to "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea") but that it ended so abruptly without a proper conclusion that would have seen Doug & Tony finally get home.

      • This episode ends on a rather bizzare note: Tony and Doug land back on the Titanic from the first episode "Rendezvous With Yesterday" and we see quick cuts of scenes from that episode. The implication is that they are caught in a timeloop and will be forced to relive the events of the 30 episodes over...and over...and over again. In repeats that works out since typically they start over with the first episode again.
